First 2011 seed catalog!

I got my first 2011 seed catalog in the mail yesterday from Pinetree Garden Seeds. Any one else get theirs?

I try to put the catalogs away till after Christmas shopping.
I should put them in a gift bag and let the family give it to me for Christmas

Got mine too. And, so it begins!!

I have HPS, Harris, & Stokes so far. Any company online has up to date online catalogs.

Pinetree for me too! My tradition used to be to save them until the week between (easy because most of them came then anyway) Christmas and New Years and read them in the evenings. Plotting out next year's gardening adventures, dreaming of the day I would have the time and space to really grow all I wanted to grow or try. Now I have the space, but still not quite the time......and all of these catalogs just keep coming sooner and sooner! Tempting me, tempting me! How can I possible save them all without looking through them first =)? Sigh, I guess I can wait to place my orders then.

I remember (old codger voice here) when they never used to come until February. I got Harris a couple weeks ago. In the past week, I got Stokes, HPS, Pinetree, and Seeds of Italy.

But I swear I am not going to buy anymore vegetable seeds for next year. I have all that done. Right? Famous last words.

While I can't speak for all gardeners, I'm definetly an impatient one. I want everything to germinate right away and come to maturity just as fast. I have an engraved rock at the entrance to my garden and it says, "Grow Dammit!" Because of my impatience, the earliest catalogs usually get the lion's share of my business every year. I somehow get the feeling that the seed companies are on to my impatience and even think there are lots of gardeners out there just like me!

since i have never used them i probably won't get one but i am sure i will get my 5 or 6 as i do every year.

Oh, I hope I get Seeds of Change again. That's a nice one. And Miller Nursery~~ if only I can remember what it was I decided I was getting this year.

I haven't heard the ones you all have mentioned.

Stokes is great for hybrid seeds. They cater to growers, and their planting directions really show that--talk about detail. But I have also found a few old-fashioned varieties with them that I could not find elsewhere--like Golden Delicious squash, which was unavailable anywhere else for years. And the stuff is hardy. I've been buying seeds from them since I first started gardening back in the eighties.

I like Seeds of Change for the inspiration. I always like try something different from them.

Park Seed/Jackson & Perkins are now owned by Blackstreet Capitol. Sold to them for 13 million following bankruptcy.
Also got a Twilley Seed catalog this week. The Indiana Berry & Plant Co. catalog came yesterday. It is packed full of information on growing all kinds of berries. Good prices on berry plants. I have bought from them for a number of years & am well satisfied.

Sad news for Park/ J and P.

There's some big operation from WI?? that sends out about 3-4 different catalogs all from the same town. I just get turned off by that, and toss them all. Too much marketing. I decide that Maine needs my money just as much as WI, given I can't support every seed co. out there.

Jung controls HPS, Vermont Bean Seed, Totally Tomatoes, Seymour's , RH Shumway's, McClure & Zimmerman, among others.
We buy all our tomato seed from TT & are well satisfied with them.

I also have been very happy with TT for pepper and tomato seed.

My Totally Tomatoes catalog came yesterday- what a huge selection of varieties!

Great! Whens mine going to come? (pout) I just ordered a stokes catalog, Bernie you are such a bad influence! : ). I'm still picking tomatoes, eggplant and peppers, just came inside with a bucket full. This is crazy. This is the best production I have gotten all season and its almost winter

I recieved Pinetree Garden Seeds catalog last week as well and placed a dummy order for about $50 which covers a good deal of the seed supplies for my 5,000 square feet of garden. Although seed prices are about half of what companies typically charge for similar seeds, the quantity is less. I raised the question in another thread here about quality of seed. Not having ordered from Pinetree in the past I have reservations about ordering only the minimum amounts of seed I will require. There were two responses on their seeds in the other thread; one negative and one positive.

Typically I would spend over $100 for the seeds I have selected in this dummy order, and although the pricing seems nice, I don't want to come up short on my seed supplies. Waiting until April to purchase seed has not worked well for me in the past two years. What's your take???

For me--since I do minimal veg gardening, the packet size is fine. I usually have seeds to save year to year even so.

mraider3, I just did place a small seed order from Pintree this weekend. I've not ordered from them before either so we'll see. My best sources for seed has always been Territorial and Park's. I still buy from Territorial and just recently tried Cherrygal and Willhite's with very good luck. I think this year I will try Victory Seed Co and Gleckler. I also tried Marianna's Heirloom Tomatoes and had good luck with them. Somehow Park's got lost in the shuffle of moving to TX. Can't remember why.....

Totally Tomatoes came today. Now I'm waiting for Baker Creek.

Vermont Bean Seed

I have my Pinetree. Waiting for Bakers Creek, Territorial and Nichols. Love them all but since I save seeds I usually don't order as much as they would like me to. Just hope they never cross me off their lists.

Even if I don't order from Territorial (which rarely happens), the germination and planting information in the catalog is so useful. l end up always using the catalog. Given these belt tightening times, I hope the economy doesn't get in the way of getting a hard copy catalog from Territorial! I don't mind ordering online, but want the catalog anyway! Haven't gotten mine yet =(.

The only 2 companies I have ever ordered from are Baker Creek and Cook's Garden.

terri-emory is right. The information in Territorial is great. I have saved back issues for years because sometimes they stop carrying a certain seed that I still have or maybe just want to know about planting times and how deep and so forth. Lots to know....

Territorial and Johnny's has gotten a bit too spendy for my taste lately. I still buy certain seeds from them, but Pinetree is hard to beat for just the right amount of seed at a very reasonable cash outlay

I have gotten Gurney's, Stokes, Twilley's, Pine Tree, Totally Tomatoes,and HPS.

Years ago I ordered mostly from Burpee. Now I order mostly from Stokes, Twilley, Willhite, Fedco, and Gurney. And yeah Bernie, I order from Indiana Berry.

I got my Nichols catalog. Seems like it has scaled down. And, lettuceman, i sure agree with you about Pinetree.

This company has all the vegetables I ate growing up in Italy and more. Their packages are huge and the seeds are viable for years.
I have tried a lot of the seed companies you are mentioning but this is my favorite.

I like Baker Creek for the low shipping price.

This is the best & only place to buy onion plants.
When you order, you pick a shipping date. The onion plants are pulled that day & you get them 1 to 2 days later. Fresh onion plants take off like gangbusters.

Way better than the plants from a super market that are all dried up. People like various seed catalogs that offer onion plants get them from the same place, just add $ to them.
