CONGRATULATIONS Pirlie !!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

First place in the photo contest for perennials AND a clematis photo to boot. Beautiful photo of a beautiful plant with fantastic composition. I think this is the photo that caused everyone to be waitlisted for Omoshiro!

Colleyville, TX(Zone 8a)

Congrats! I am having trouble viewing the photos but will definitely look for yours Pirl.

Thank you, everyone.

You're a wonderful friend, Louise.

Well, you know I have always loved that picture, especially your other shot of this clematis!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thanks, Sue. I have a few hundred shots of it but I'm guessing you liked last year's photo, as I did.

This year's shot was taken as a quick storm was passing through so there were times without sunshine.

Congratulations to you, Sue, on your many wins in the contest including the fabulous first place in Cacti/Succulents, as well as to Louise with that dazzling red peony.

You too, Sue !
Louise: I envy you for being able to grow peonies. That red one is fantastic !

Thanks, JD. The contest was fun, as always.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Pirl - I am so glad you won. All the photos were great but yours was magnificant.
Do you know how we find out who the other winners are? I can't find a thread or anything.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Thank you so much, mstish!

Here's the link: http://davesgarden.com/contest/2010-photography-contest

After viewing all of the winners and runers up.....all I can say is WOW! Nature is awesome and we have some great photographers capturing its glory her on Daves Garden.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

We truly are blessed with so many great photographers, mainly Sue!

This shot was taken just to show the size of Omoshiro - a full 6" across. Can't wait to see it in 2011.

Congratulations to all of you! You humble me.

Thanks, Dathen.

I'm positive that some clem's are born to be lush and gorgeous while others are more ordinary looking and just not exciting. I do love the tiny ones like Duchess of Albany and would gladly take photos but the deer love that one.

The white clem's are often overlooked but I find them so appealing. I'd probably have entered this one in the contest but the earwigs feasted on the blossom closest to the tree. It's Lanuginosa Candida and just glows in the shade.

Between the deer and the earwigs I think of Henry Mitchell's quote about weeds:
Make no mistake, the weeds will win: nature bats last.

Nature always bats last for us gardeners.

I love the white ones, too. I planted 2 Candida in shade last year - I had a blossom on one of them. The one in the deepest shade finally popped out of the ground after I had given up all hope. I'm going to leave them there another year and see what they do - even if they only have a few blossom I will be very happy.

It does feel like nature doesn't always reward all of our efforts sometimes!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That is true.

I have fewer blossoms since I have it in the shade but it's worth it to me for the way it just glows.

Long Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

Pirl sent me a Henryi clematis and I'm still trying to discern why the green markings on the blooms completely vanish on the 2nd day. Other than that, it grows beautifully. Must be the temperature ???

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

It does the exact same thing here, JD, so I doubt it's the temperature and I chalk it up to the nature of the flower.

In this photo you can see the newly opened Henryi with the green stripes and below it an older blossom that has lost the stripes. It grows in about 30% shade.

This photo was taken October 11, 2010 and there are no stripes to be seen in fall.

I think that was one I had on my wish list based on many claims of it being a favorite, sure love that look and you get a two-for-one bloom!

Montgomery, TX(Zone 9a)

I would die for that one! LOL!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Actually it's one of the common ones like Multi-Blue, The President, Duchess of Edinburgh, Belle of Woking, Jackmanii, Niobe and Nelly Moser.

Montgomery, TX(Zone 9a)

Never seen anything like it here in Texas. This is all I've ever seen here.

That's lovely!

The only ones I ever see in retail stores are Henryii, Ramona and Jackmanii in the DFW area

Is it true that Omisharo petals are pink on the back?

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes, it is true. You can see the reverse side of Omoshiro in this photo, taken on a windy day.

Upon reviewing additional photos of Omoshiro I ran across this one of an old bloom with a brand new bloom just opening and, at the bottom of the new bloom, you can see the dark pink reverse is only at the edges and does not extend to the entire center.
