Could this be a scribbler spider egg sac? One of these spiders had a web in my front yard a couple of months ago. I found the sac in the photo at the base of my front door after returning from a trip.

This does indeed appear to be a spider egg sac, but although it is possible that it was constructed by a so-called 'scribbler' spider (most likely Argiope aurantia), it certainly is not typical for that species - see http://tinyurl.com/2evshnq for an image.
