Fabulous fall fruit 2010

Scott County, KY(Zone 5b)

Weerobin kicked off an excellent fall color thread. Let's do the same here for this year's fruit (and give my old thread from 2007 a well-deserved rest).

We came from here (In flagrante fructifero): http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/802338/

There are so many holly fruits this year, it ain't even funny. Here's an image from the recent HSA annual meeting to start off, of a brand new selection being introduced by the University of Tennessee Arboretum at Oak Ridge: Ilex x 'Jan's Jade'.

For insatiable holly enthusiasts, you could do worse than join this organization. For fun, they compete with sprigs of holly of every denomination imaginable. It is quite awe-inspiring to see them all lined up...

It was a great spring, and the resultant fruit set displays this fall are spectacular. The crabapples and hollies are sure competing for the most beautiful displays this fall.

Here's the fruit on a chinese pistacia.

Weerobin:

Should bring your Wahoo pics over here - these KY plants could use the company...

...'cause here's who they hang out with when they have no positive examples to emulate.

Wow, Hoosier, that Red Sprite is really going to town!!

I was noticing today the birds plucking the remaining holly berries from my shrubs.
It was a feast all day long!

I can see who got all the rainfall the second half of the growing season! Looking good for HoosierGreen and Weerobin.

Fortunately, watering containers around some of the winterberries kept them happy enough.

Sadly, that would be the wrong conclusion, VV.
We've been dry as a bone.
Every potential front missed us.
I've spent the last couple weekends moving hoses around,
which is ridiculous for this time of year!
And it only works for the few beds near the house.
Everywhere else dry as toast!

We've also been dry as a bone. We're over 10" behind in rainfall totals since July 1st. However, the berry set seemed unaffected since they were pretty well formed by July. Hopefully, we'll get some much needed rain this week. It's supposed to be a mild and wet winter. We can only hope!

Ahh...the alabaster fruited Sorbus species.

Here's some late hangers-on:

Lindera benzoin, Spicebush.

Thanks for the pictures. I was discussing shrubs for bird habitat just this morning. All are so pretty. I have American Beautyberry, Winterberry, and Inkberry, Possumhaw and Cornus florida. I like all of them.

You ought to be getting all the snow/fruit shots now, eh Resin?

Does the White-berried Rowan show up better, or disappear?
