I found him dead. He was attacked to a stem.

This is a cicada (Hemiptera/Auchenorrhyncha: Cicadidae) in the genus Tibicen - see http://tinyurl.com/26c35rm for an example. These often are called 'dog-day cicadas, as their peak emergence usually occurs during late summer.
Thanks so much . I was 10 when I moved to Florida and I always heard the song and I sometimes saw the discarded cicada skin. I never knew the name of the insect and I never saw the insect until yesterday. It only took 42 years!
