This guy appeared on my bathroom floor a week ago. I have lived in California for 20 years and have never seen anything like him. He kind of looks like a baby tarantula to me. Is he native to California ... Marin County specifically? We received a shipment from India the week before and I am wondering if he was in the packing???
I would venture to say it is a wolf spider. I just had a very similar one in my house this week.
This most likely is a tube trapdoor spider (family Nemisiidae) in the genus Calisoga - see http://tinyurl.com/2baa9x3 for an example. They are closely related to tarantulas, and sometimes called "false tarantulas." They are native to California.
