When I was a child, we'd see H bees and know that we could catch them in our hands without fear of being stung.
Is this one or some other? I am in Yosemite area, California foothills.

This insect cannot sting or bite you, as it is a fly in the family Syrphidae (flower/hover flies) - see http://tinyurl.com/2f654gt for another example.
Interesting, maybe these are the ones I remember.. Thank You!
