To honor our vets who have served and are currently serving.
We salute you!
In honor of our Veterans
That pic was hubby's dad US Air Force, Staff Sargeant
My dad (WWII), 2 brothers (1 during Vietnam), 1 sis and bil(Persian Gulf War) were in the Navy
My 1 nephew is currently in the Marines in Afganistan, my other nephew(Army) is in Germany to be deployed to Afganistan in Jan or Feb
My uncle was a pilot in the Army WWII, my grandfather was in the Army in WWI
Hubby's uncle was a fighter pilot during the Korean War and was actually shot down and became a POW until they released him.
So needless to say, vets are near and dear to my heart.
Great idea, Jen. Yes - thanks to all who have worn the uniform.
Absolutely. The best of the best doing a very tough job. Thankyou.
flowAjen....
flowAjen:
Thank you for the rememberance.
(I might not have spelled it correctly, but I think you understand.)
My (late) dad was in the WWII precursor to the Air Force, it was the "Army Air Corps" (If I remember correctly).
He served in Europe; he was not a "high flying" pilot superstar, but a ground support guy that helped keep supplies moving. In later decades (1960's), he moved up in rank significantly as an Air Force reserve officer, matching his increased status in the business world.
But he was most proud of his WWII risks.
Thanks to them ALL.....!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My dad was army air corps too. Joined just after the war - December '45. Was stationed in Labrador. Happy to report that Labrador was never invaded while he was there.
Yeah, my dad had it tough in WWII, he patrolled the Caribbean on a PT boat
Our smallest capital of Montpelier, VT. has a parade of the few WW 2 vets that can still march, and those from Korea & V.Nam and a couple of young kids home from Iraq! Marching to an older Memorial Mem. service of 15 mins., at the H.S. and back maybe 1/2 mile to a 5 yr. old Mem. Service at City Hall. They note same memories of this same freezing Nov. weather of being WW2 vets in the trenches all over the European/Italian conflict. (not many left) But will march with no warm hats, carrying heavy flags, with V.F.W. auxiliary woman with little protections but "snuggies" underneath their uniforms. This happening all over this country. God Bless them all, and our troops in harms way now and the 200 years of USA wars. This day is a sacred day!
CK Lawson in Vermont. (Dispite personal warring reasons of where & why we are for numerous wars, and greater bombs, they are terrifying children, ruining ordinary homes of families & pets, and crushing the terrain of natural plants, wildlife habitat, native birds, and nasty terrain if in 50 yrs. it can ever been cleaned up, say nothing of the deaths of so many innocent natives in the entire area of Iraq & Afaghanistin. How much more abuse can this planet stand??
Yes, we take so much for granted now....a functional bathroom, a cup of hot coffee.
A lot of those guys in WWII thought it was a "great day" when they weren''t being shot at, or slogging through mud for 12 hours.
Jeepers, I confess to "wimpdom" compared to those brave souls.
VtRoots6440:
Yes there is a HUGE difference between WWII, and current "strategic interventions."
Hitler made it clear he was immediately aiming for Great Britain as his next conquest, in pursuit of world domination in just a few weeks. Britain was very weak in defense (defence) and munitions since the end of the First World War, and that maniac wanted to strike while he had the opportunity.
There is no question that the Free World was in jeopardy due to a 2-theatre war.
Jen,
Thank you for the rememberance.
Grandfather served in the Army during WWl
Father was in the Army/Air Force as an air traffic controller in England during WWll.
Brother #2 was in the Navy on a submarine during Vietnam
Brother #4 was in the Navy on a destroyer during Vietnam
Brother # 5 was a Marine stationed in Vietnam
Nephew # 2 is a Marine and served during Dessert Storm.
That's an impressive list !!!
We were blessed.....they all came home. ^_^
Yay!
I love these WWII photos....one photo tells an entire story. Bravery.
Nice pic, Marilyn.
one uncle was in the water in pearl harbor - has nightmares to this day
another served a few tours of duty in the navy - was in Vietnam
my wifes dad served in three wars in the marines and was the youngest sargent major ever at the time, still could be for all we know
father was in the army after korea never saw military action
Nice thread. Thanks Jen
DD#1'S ex served in Vietnam, came home in bad health, declined and died last year.
Her present husband is a Gulf War vet.
I remember WW2 Uncle served in the Phillipines.
Dad had a war job, managing Jamaican immigrents in Long Island truck farms. No one at home to do the work.
Wow - impressive, Bill. I had many uncles in WW2. Army, marines and navy. Cousins and uncles in Korea. Cousins in Vietnam. A friend's dad was a Pearl Harbor survivor.
yup that is what a draft will do - pretty much everyone went. we are very lucky today for those that choose to serve.
come to think my cousin is a lifer in the army just got back from Iraq last year. no action though to quote him his job was to "count the tanks"
Worried about theft?? ^_^
My Dad never served because his company sent him to Dexter, ME....guess the enemy wouldn't look there....he was building eyelet machines for shells....we had an impressive array of the shells he brought home with him. Empty ones.
yep from other army divisions
In addition to honoring oue Veterans I want to take special note of all those who have and continue to care for our Vets especially those who have been wounded by war whether the wounds can be seen or not.
Yes, the support teams for "the aftermath" are very important, as well as family and community.
Very true.
VTRoots and others,
Today on NPR's "Tell Me More" program there was a segment on Native American vets called "America's First Warriors". Here is a link

Support the troops!!!! My dad was in WWI serving in France. I myself did 20 years in the Navy with 5 campaigns off the coast of Vietnam on a destroyer and a carrier. I have a few friends listed on the "wall".
Thank you for your many years of service, and those of your dad and colleagues
Yes - thank you, Frank.
Nice. Love DC.
Thank you for sharing the photos...I haven't been to D.C. in so many years, you captured some of the good stuff!
