Saw this growing on the side of the road so I jumped out and took a picture. Just to embarrass my kids

how big were the flowers?

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

It is a False Foxglove, Agalinis probably this one.

UT has some nice photos as far as distinguishing that one from the prairie one.

Supposedly it grows pretty easy from seeds (except they ripen from the bottom up on the stem, so you have to keep coming back to collect them). I just tried it this year for the first time, so we'll see.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL @ "just to embarrass the kids"!!! That's awesome!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Thank you! This is the first year I've noticed it. Now I'll have to go to stop and see if there are any seeds. Please pray that my kids' eyes don't get stuck in the "eye rolling" position. : )

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Well at least I gave her starting point, it is hard to tell from her picture which is not very clear, but judging by the thickness of the foliage I tend to think it might be heterophylla.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Those seeds are extremely fine, even finer than penstemon, if you get any and plant them don't cover them with soil, just scatter and pat down.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks everyboy-Frostweeed just say it the picture "sucked". I was in a hurry my dear sons were making me nervous. Also, the camara focuses by itself and the plant was so thick it didn't know what to focus on.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

No problem, it worked right?

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I know, but you were so polite about it. I knew one of you experts could tell me what it was dispite the terrible picture. I could feel my 15 and 13 yr old glaring at me through the truck windows. They were so affraid that one of their friends might come by and see me taking pictures of plants, again.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Yes, aren't kids funny? If they only knew, but maybe some day they will be doing the same thing, at least I hope so.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I think it will be funny when they realize nobody even cares what they're doing. I always remind them that they have done many things to embarrass me.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Lisa....That plant is a host plant for the Common Buckeye Butterfly also! Meaning they lay eggs on it and the caterpillar feeds on it until it pupates.

Sheila-Is that Tickseed? It sure is pretty.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Tickseed or Coreopsis, not sure.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It kinda looks like a Cosmos.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila-My wildflower catalog says Tickseed/Lance-leaved Coreopsis so its the same thing.
Stephanie-the flower does look like a cosmos but the foliage is different. Cosmos has a "feathery" foliage and is an annual this is a perennial.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I believe it could be a cosmos. I am posting another larger picture, both were from 2006 too long for me to remember.
This one in plantfiles looks like it to me. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/98863/

That's a cosmos. Looks like one of those dwarf varieties. I thought the seed pods looked familiar! LOL

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

That one definitely looks like a cosmo. The flowers look so much alike I'm always confusing them. Butterflies love both of them. : )

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I love them both also. Just don't remember to sow the cosmos seeds!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

I buy them in bulk for my business. Cosmos, Seashell Cosmos, Cut Flower Blend and Zinnias. I didn't sow one of those seeds this year for myself! Dumb, Dumb, Dumb I kept thinking I'll do it tomorrow and then it was Oct. Next Year!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Sheila, you shouldn't have to worry about sowing any if you let them reseed. I started out with 3 plants and now I get TONS every year! I have some extra seed if you need it in the spring.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Not sure why they didn't resow for me. I had a heavy mulch that year could be the reason. I have seeds so I am going to try again this next year. I can't seem to remember to put out my poppies and larkspur seeds either. It gets cold and I don't think gardening much until it's already spring.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Sow larkspur and poppies now. I think 1/2 my problem is that my flowerbeds are so full, but zinnias and cosmos are so pretty and make beautiful cut flowers too.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Really? Maybe that is why I don't ever have many come up. I wait too long. I have plenty seeds to sow...get out this week.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

You can go ahead and sow your cosmos seeds as well. They'll sprout when it's warm in the spring.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Shelia-when do you normally sow larkspur and poppies?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I forget to ....that is my problem. I am going to get them out soon so I won't have to try and remember after last frost...glad you and Stephanie told me. I don't do well with wintersowing like you do Stephanie. I think I got six milkweed and a hand full of zinnia last year out of my WS.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Larkspur and poppies don't need any protection from the cold just get the seeds out soon (no need to wait until after last frost on those) and you should have spring blooms.

You can sow cosmos seeds now but the seedlings are not frost tolerant and those that do germinate will die when there is a frost. I usually sow those after the last frost only because our weather is so erratic 85* one day and freezing the next. : )

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Thanks to you both and appreciate the {off topic} use of the thread.

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Off topic is usually more fun IMHO my question had been answered.
Shelia-do I need to remind you again to sow those seeds?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL!! Didn't do it yet....putting a sticky note to myself to do tomorrow! I had to walk the streets in the neighborhood passing out our meeting flyers today, and cleaned the garage. Never did anything in the garden. I think it may rain tomorrow so I can put them out early and they will be on their way.
Thanks

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I need to remember to toss out my poppy seeds. I found them the other day when I cleaned off the end of the kitchen counter which doubles as my seed storing space. LOL

(Carey) Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

Oh I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who uses the kitchen counter for plants and seeds. There isn't much cooking in our kitchen with the lack of available space. lol!

Liberty Hill, TX(Zone 8a)

Carey-Amen to that. Even though it is kinda embarrassing. My kids have even tricked their friends into trying to eat the peat pellets, saying they were choc.

Josephine, Arlington, TX(Zone 8a)

Well. I have seeds on the kitchen counter too, a big bowl full of packets, I must do something about it before Christmas.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I think all gardeners have a pile somewhere. Mine is usually on my computer where I was looking up requirements, or by the back door where my intention was to take them to the shop. One year I was industrious and made a seed book. I found it didn't work any better for me to make use of them, but it was easier to find something I wanted to share.

You are so organized Sheila, I wish I was.
