Saw this black and brown spider underneath my deck on a chilly fall day in October 26,2010, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Extremely large for our province, about 9cm long from tip to tip. I think its a common Large Hourse Spider?

This is indeed a funnel web spider (family Agelenidae) in the genus Tegenaria; the giant house spider, Tegenaria duellica, is a reasonable possibility - see http://tinyurl.com/23wls4b
