Scale? I.D. - Camera MIA

Sebastian, FL(Zone 9b)

Hi everyone, I scrolled through several pages of posts/thumbnails and didn't see anything mentioned like these bugs I now have all over several plants. My camera is MIA and probably couldn't take a seeable picture of something so small as these....pinhead sized.....so I'll try and describe them clearly. I'm thinking they are a type of scale as they don't crawl around......I've marked their locations on numerous leaves with a pen and they never seem to move. They start out as tiny white specks that almost look like teeny baby mealy bugs. As they grow larger though their bodies appear dark and the white color becomes tiny dots on the tops of them. When I first see them as the tiny white dots they are on the tops of the leaves.....when I see them as the dark-bodied, white spotted things they are on the undersides of the leaves, primarily along the spines of the leaves.

I spent half an hour or better looking through the Bug Files too and didn't find anything to I.D. these. TIA very much to anyone who can help me I.D. these creatures!

Thanks :-) Becky

Without an image, one is reduced to guessing. I suggest that you take some of the infested leaves to the Indian River County office of Florida's Cooperative Extension service to see what they say. See http://indian.ifas.ufl.edu/ for contact information.
