Japanese Method - Jan's (Jannich) project

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Hey all!!! Hope you have your trailers ready!! I am using Shiawassee Trail (again). I have cut off a sucker that I had.

Bad thing is...we have to make them look puny...for now :) I have cut off the bottom leaves and left the top 4

Now, I have planted the baby up to the leaves. I have decided to wick water this. You will need to place your baby close to the lights at this stage. Okay everyone...share with us the trailer you are using and post your pics :)

I started from leaves a few months ago and have tiny babies to start with now. I'm trying R. Humpty Doo, R Vanilla Trail, R. Jindalee, R. Gundaro, R. Boolaroo, Foxwood Trail, Champagne Pink, Fancy Trail, R. Galiwinku, R. Sticky Wicket, S. Orbicularis, and R. Wagga Wagga.

I've had a few weeks of taking out leaves already, with some showing results (suckers) and others nothing yet. This is the best so far, it's R. Wagga Wagga

Great news, Everyone!!! Jan called me tonight and she will be joining us shortly with the project. I am SOOO thrilled :) Lynn, I am also thrilled that you will be joining us a little later. Hopefully we can complete this even though it will take awhile to do.

Wow, Jamie! Such a variety of trailers :) Can't wait to see how each one turns out. Looks like you are on your way. We need to keep these close to the lights and the next step comes when they start producing buds. We will each arrive at that stage at different times...depending on the variety. I have a feeling you will get there first lol. You are off to a GREAT start!!!

Waiting for others to post :)

Helene and stownes...where are you???? Jan (wiggiej), did you get yours going last night? We've got to see some pics and posts ladies :) Jamie has a head start on us and Lynn and Jan will be joining a little later so this can be an awesome group project for us all.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Hey Sis,
I think I may have one or two I haven't murdered with kindness LOL.I will join in as soon as I can. This was my special trailer from Heidi that I lost....Champagne Pink.

Somewhere I have a better picture.Too tired to look tonight.

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

That's a great pic, Sis! Hmmmm....I will have to go look. Did I possibly get a baby from you? If I have it, maybe part of it can move back to your house lol.

Longboat Key, FL(Zone 9b)

i do not grow under lights so I think I cannot participate after all. Have enough natural light here in FL.
Then I only have one trailer and I don't want to loose it.It is struggeling. I don't do well with trailers....

Considered buying lighted stand, but not just now. Helene

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Hate to hear that Helene. I have mine under a "desk top" Ott light with the plant sitting on top of an inverted container for height. You could always use a lamp with a fluorescent bulb in it. Lots of ways to do it but that is up to you :) I have stuck those leaves that I removed from mine in case mine doesn't make it.

Lynn- I got 3 baby Champagne Pink's when I grew from a leaf (only 3 because leaf is so pale?) Would you like 1 for this project? How did you lose that gorgeous one you had? Oh, is it cold where you are? In the 80's here today, but would have to hope for luck on shipping. You could send me a leaf of something in return.

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Oh you are so sweet!! I would love a leaf.I have sent some starts of it to others, but I don't remember who.....old age LOL.
It is getting cool here, but it should still be safe to ship as long as it's in a plastic bag or something.I would be happy to send you something in return. What do you like to grow?
I really am not positive what happened to mine.I think it was just watered and I accidentally left the north window in my plant room open for almost 2 days, thinking I had shut it.We had a big cold wind, which blew the plant room door shut, and when I opened it,it was freezing in there!! My huge Episcia ,Fannie Hague, also collapsed, but I was able to save several stolons. It's a tough old bird!! Sorta like me......grin.

Lynn Dmail your address to me. I don't have good leaves, only a little starter that's already been pruned for this project. It has no suckers yet. Do you have a chirita leaf in return?

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Hello girls! Looks like I'll have a trailer soon to start this project with you. Yeah!

Jan

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

YEAH!!

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

YAY JAN!!!!!!! Just hope that "vendor" sent you something that is still alive when you get it LOL!!! I know they will replace it if it doesn't :)

Connie

Andalusia, AL(Zone 8b)

Well, the trailer came today. The "vendor" did a wonderful job making sure it stayed warm and happy ^_^

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Here is my Champagne Pink for the project. Thanks Jamie ^_^. It is close to the lights.I will update when it grows.

YAY, Jan!!! So glad they made it okay for you. Which one are you going to use?

Well Lynn, your new baby has started her journey. I am sure she will grow beautifully for you and I have a feeling she will grow at a fast pace. Champagne Pink will do that sometimes :) So glad you have joined in with this project!!

Any lurkers working on this with us? Come on and don't be shy. Show those babies. This is a project that we are all learning to do so jump in and get your feet wet with us. Then, if and when we run into different situations with our trailers we can help each other along the way as a group :))

I have a trailer with a veeeery long neck....any ideas?

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Hey Jan :)

Would you feel comfortable with a little surgery? Cut the neck and GENTLY scrape the neck that will be repotted. Good info on Rob's Violets.

Connie

Ann Arbor, MI

Hi guys --

As I've mentioned, I've been kinda outta commision for the last week or two, so I'm still officially a lurker. But please count me in -- I'll get caught up with you all as soon as get caught up on other stuff. I've got a couple nice little plants (Myakka Trail, a couple Robs, maybe a Senk trailer if I get really brave!) picked out. I just have to read the link carefully and do the necessary pruning.

wiggiej /Jan #3

PS: "Jan III" would probably be more dignified but sounds a bit grandiose, I'm afraid :)

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

LOL Jan 111..I love it!!

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Connie--I have tried the surgery in the past with not great results most times--not sure what I'm doing wrong. I agree with the discussion about inconsistent care--think that's how I lost so many plants this past year, given life events. Still not back on track. I'll get there...

Montgomery, AL

Connie- some of the early trailers I have developed long necks rather than suckers (after harsh pruning). I then buried those hoping suckers would arise under the soil. It's too early to see yet. What has been your experience in those cases?

Northeast, MO(Zone 5b)

Hey Jamie,

Trailers have a very shallow root system, so it depends on how long the long necks are. Are they laid across the medium? Standards do better with pinching back to promote fuller growth and blooms. I was told semis and minis, not so much.

Montgomery, AL

I've pinched all mine back to only a very, very few leaves and placed under bright light. These are brand new, tiny plantlets grown from leafs. After a while, some varieties just grow taller (no suckers) and leave me with a long neck while others immediately form multiple crown suckers that I let elongate to eventually pinch and pin across the soil. On the tiny plant with a too long neck I wonder, if I place the neck deeper, will suckers form from below the soil (node joints from pinched leaves) or do they only form from a stem above ground? I have extras and am trying both ways but wonder if any of ya'll already know what will happen? Maybe I should have pinned the too long neck across the soil to begin with and not buried it?

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Jamie,
I hope someone answers your question.I need to learn about trailers too.

I have trailers now!! Thanks Jamie ^_^

WOW Sista Lynn!!! Santa came early to your house. You will stay busy with your new babies this winter. My gracious, you've got lots of trailers now :)

Jamie, you probably know just about as much on trailers as the rest of us do. I am sure I will repeat what you already know LOL!!! There are two types of trailers: bush type and creeping type. The bush type has the habit of growing upright and the creeping lays down and runs all over the place. You may be dealing with a bush type. Guess that is why I had asked if it was laying across the medium. I don't think planting the neck deeper will solve your problem if this is the case. If you do soft pinching and not hard pinching, the baby will grow fuller and should produce shoots.

Connie
