Pineapple Sage

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

That is lovely! I will have to try it next year.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, definitely try it. You'll love it.

beautiful Karen... I brought mine in as well... didn't de-bug though... will start spraying now though.. the container didn't look too funky ... hope for the best

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Mine made it through the very chilly night so I'll try and dig it up today and bring it inside though, with the price being so cheap, it's easier to buy a new one next year.

I have to measure it because it seems closer to 8' wide!

Wow! That's huge!

Holy cow. That is one plant? Sure must like your place. I bet the hummers do too.

Thomaston, CT

The blooms on mine are not upright, but drooping.....is there more than one variety?

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Love it! Yours is a beauty, Pirl!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

I have no idea how many varities of Pineapple Sage there are but this one certainly liked living here this past summer and fall but not a hummer in sight.

It really is just one plant, Pat.

Thanks, Louise. We cross posted.

Marilyn, the blooms droop at first, then become upright once the open up. Is yours just starting?

Mine is not looking too good. I don't think it's getting enough water, for one, plus the porch is getting cold at night, though not as cold as outside. Well, if it doesn't make it, then, as Pirl said, they are pretty cheap to buy, so I can always get more in the spring. Maybe my cuttings will do better.

I bet the hummers would love it, though here is blooms too late for them. I think they've already flown south by the time it has begun to bloom.

wow Pirl is that massive!!!... really must like your soil

Thomaston, CT

Karen, it's been blooming about a month... blossoms never became upright, or opened as fully....I do think I must have another variety....my leaves look different as well...larger & darker.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Here's a close up photo. I hope it helps you to identify it, Marilyn.

Thanks, Pirl....I'll post mine tomorrow.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Looking forward to see pics of that, Marilyn. Maybe there are other varieties.

Ok, so now you are all guilty when it comes to me explaining why I need another plant to DH. :) This thread has sold me on the pinapple sage....now im sorry I let my baby die last summer. I was a bad Mommy and it dried up with no water in a pot. The least I could of done was stick it in the ground! Next year ^_^, i'll do better now that i've seen all these gorgeous pictures!!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Pixie - they perform a good service. When the daylilies have been cut back after bloom, just two or three PS could make a lovely display for the balance of the season.

Thomaston, CT

Good suggestion, Pirl! Here's mine, sort of frost damaged......

And some interior leaves which look better....maybe they get the purple coloration when it gets cold.......

If it's not crunchy then it's okay!

Thomaston, CT

Yes, I'm surprised it's still living, but the bluestone holds the heat.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oops! We're enabling you, Celeste. Sorry!!!! :-)

I don't know about the purple coloration on that. I've never gotten it on mine. The stem on that one with the flowers is bent, so that one won't straighten out when blooming. They aren't all bent, are they? Is there a salvia forum on DG that you could ask about it on?

Karen

Thomaston, CT

Yes.....they are all droopy....never get upright for me.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I don't know why they would be like that. It's odd.

Karen

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Mine are upright and still going strong. They made it through those cold nights in great shape and, with the warm week ahead, I expect them to continue with the beauty they bring to the fall garden. Even the dahlias are (mostly) in great shape.

Thomaston, CT

Oh how nice, Pirl! Dahlias have been dug here....I only dug 4....I intend to keep them in my Mom's spare fridge....if they make it, I'll do that again with more of them.

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Now I'll be on the watch for yet another refrigerator! I have about 100 to dig and just don't feel like doing it since many are still in bloom.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

keep them in the fridge huh... that's a new one on me

Thomaston, CT

I read an article years ago...think it was in Yankee Mag....that someone on either Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard with a huge collection of dahlias overwintered them in brown paper bags in a spare fridge.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I didn't know you could keep them in the fridge. I have several that need to be dug. Better get that done soon.

Karen

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

The ideal holding temperature for tubers is 40 to 50 so check the temperature in the refrigerator.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

The fridge should be kept no higher than 41. I don't know what the actual temp is in ours. Our basement is probably around 50, maybe less. That's where I plan on storing mine.

Here's a collage of pics of my pineapple sage taken today in the porch. Not looking the greatest, but not too bad, considering. At least it's blooming.

My cellar is too warm....I will check my Mom's fridge....she keeps very little down there, don't know why she still runs it....I think she hides ice cream in the freezer!

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

Finally got to cut back the pineapple sage last Monday, in an effort to bring it inside - forget it! The stems are the size of quarters. I put a lot of compost on top in the hopes that just maybe it will return. If not I'll buy more.

I did find the plant tag! It only says "Pineapple Sage Salvia Elegans".

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Too bad it's gotten too big for you to bring in, Pirl. Mine is doing well, in spite of the fact that the temps took a big dive in that porch a few weeks ago. Found out the heating vent was blocked. Fixed it right away, but I lost several plants. The brugmansias lost their foliage, but they're starting to put out new leaves now, so they're okay. Here's a pic from today of my PS.

mine is not looking too happy

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

That's an understatement for mine, Allison, but I was startled and shocked to see the green tissue when I cut it back. I would have thought the cold killed it. I may lay a bag of mulch on top of it (on top of the compost).

Karen - you did good! Glad you got the problem fixed and that you didn't lose the PS.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Pirl, maybe you could just pile up leaves on your PS for the winter and see what happens. Who knows?

Karen

(Arlene) Southold, NY(Zone 7a)

There's a pile of chipped garden twigs/stems/etc. on top, then leaves, then will come a bag of pine needles and we'll see if it survives the winter, Karen.
