Propagate climbing hydrangea

Would I be able to do rooting by wrapping the "stem grippers" that attach the vine to wood fences? I would wrap with moist peat moss and then with plastic wrap.

Howdy, Marcia...

It's quite possible to do that ("air-layering"). I'd use the areas where the new wood meets the old growth and even slightly scar the node before wrapping it in peat/plastic. On some air-layering that I do I go so far as to cut a small diagonal slit near the node then insert a tiny twig/stick or even stuff the slit with peat to hold the slit open a little bit.

After wrapping in peat and plastic you may want to wrap foil around it, too, keeping the sun from over-heating the plastic as well as keeping nosy birds from pecking away at the peat and such.

HI Shoe..how are you doing? Thanks for the info. I am going to try to set that up this week. We are flying into the dormant season with Really high winds and the weather is cooling off quickly....but at least I would have the set up on, so can be ready for growth in the spring.
Thanks so much,
Marcia

Good going. And if it doesn't root then you can always take new wood tip cuttings in the spring, those will root fairly easily.

Cool weather up your way...we had a few days of it, today it is 82 with rains moving in...kinda scary weather, if you ask me.

Take care!

thanks for the tips, thought I would give it a try..been potting up everything I can think of. We have one 10"tall mango plant, a forest of tangerine seedlings, a tiny arborvitae seedling, 2 burr oaks (keeping my fingers crossed on them cause of the Long tap roots that I tried to dig up carefully!!
We are mid-40s with frost tomorrow night. The winds have been really high-peeling roofs off of the buildings. I decided to divide the tender plants on the porch, rather than risk my noggin with more bumps!! We had been quite dry, but got 2 days of soaking rain..really nice.
Lots of veggies being put up?

Sounds like you have a nice little "orchard"! I love mangoes! Tangerines, too.

I'd love to see mid-40 temp...we've just been thru a night of tornadoes all around us, 14 spotted yesterday and last night, only a few touched down though and those were north of me. Not a single person was hurt though so that is a plus, eh?

Yep, putting up veggies here! Canned and/or froze butterbeans, cowpeas, okra, green beans, purple beans. Will be making pickled beets soon.

Coffee is on so gonna go wander around and check for any wind damage from last night. Got some nice rain out of that storm so it looks like a day to work in the g-house, too wet outside!

Have fun with those plants!

MG, I've been getting a lot of people interested in starts from my Climbing Hydrangea's since they have been putting on their spring display. the 1st 7 years I didn't get many blooms but after that, the plants are loaded every year. I get a lot of runners that I dig up and pot up. but the demand is growing. so I'll have to try more ways to propagate them. thanks, Jim

I am going to give a try in the spring. I ran out of time with trying to get everything done before the cold hit. It hit, I still have stuff on the porch. Will have to pry pots off..it got down to single digits last night. :0
