Any Iochroma collectors out there?

Petaluma, CA(Zone 9a)

Since Brugmansias are closely related to Iochroma's, just wondering if anyone is collecting them? Have bought a few lately from eBay and Kartuz Greenhouses, but know very little about them. Any pictures or thoughts/recommendations would be appreciated. Picture is of a very young Iochroma Grandiflora.

That's pretty Mike. I want to start collecting them. I got some seeds from ebay for the blue, but they didn't germinate. I don't know if I did something wrong or if they were old or what. I'll try again next spring. Maybe I'll just get some plants instead. Roxanne

Roxxanne, I'm trying to propogate some Iochroma's now - since you are the only one interested, and I'm successful with the propation, contact me in the springtime and maybe we can work something out!

Will do, Thanks!!

Well... Mike.. the are fun..large trees.. I don't know of a plant that likes food or water quite as much as they do.. next year at this time you'll not be able to touch it's upper flowers...always blooming.. I started deadheading them ths year, and they keep blooming even better

Do they have fragrance? Do you overwinter them the same as brugs?

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

No fragrance here... yes... I overwinter them with my brugs... but I likely keep mine a bit more active and awake than some do... last winter it bloomed alot through the winter..

Have been purchasing Iochroma's from eBay this year as well as Brugmansias. Its so refreshing when someone like Brenda (aka theraglady) steps up and offers cuttings for postage. Have not done any trading, but it sure seems like the way to go, as my eBay expenses are adding up. I have serveral Iochroma's in the green house that I have been propogating. Here is Iochroma Indigo.

I would love to try these Iochroma's....would trade 'Isabella' Brug cuttings (rooted) for any of these plants.

Petaluma, CA(Zone 9a)

Want to get more involved in trading, so sure DirtyGirl71, I'll trade you. Might as well start with the longest route possible (California - Florida)...
I'll send you D-mail.

Brandon, FL(Zone 9b)

already sent ya a few d-mails back...hope it helps...let me know how many you are interested in....I can make shipment tomorrow!

I find these set pods easily, I just plucked a flower and rubbed it on another cultiver. And I had great germination by sprinkleing the very tine seeds on top of the soil, pressing them in and misting under a dome.

Claremont, CA(Zone 9b)

My Iochroma (purple) is the happiest plant in the yard. In dappled shade under tall pines, it gets 15' tall before I force myself to prune it. Needs water here in dry Southern California, and can get buggy. (Tanglefoot stopped the ants and soapy water offed the bugs.) Otherwise, it's a breeze.

I have to cut it back, will be happy to send several cuttings in exchange for a double or triple white Brug.

I got hooked on these last fall. To me much easier than Brugs, and I find the smaller blooms intriguing...and the hummer's love love love them. I've got the Purple Queen, and recently got noid Red Cuttings from another DG'er, that rooted fine as well as blue, but the blue didn't take. I tried growing blue from seed, one came up...but is now just sorta sitting there, not growing. Here they need afternoon shade for sure in the summer. I've been experimenting with in ground as well as container growing. They should be hardy here, but the one I had in the ground has not come back yet. And Gordon is right...hungry thirsty little buggers !
Here's my Purple Queen...

Oh my they are beautiful. I am just starting with my first Brugs so have nothing to trade. Would you consider a small piece for postage that I could root?

The marketplace has seed. Check it out.

yes... it's well.. not warm yet.. but not terribly cold anymore either.. is that spring.. OK..close enough..
I built a cool room on the roof.. a house made of 2" thick foam.. there the brugs and iochromas.. among some others.. spent the winter.. I went into the cool room / house three times during the winter from setting them out till today.. today.. I montor the heat and humidity of the room from downstairs.. and go up and water them when the humidity inside drops to about 60% .... now it's time to start them growng turn the windowless house...with 24/7 flourescent grow lightng.. into a greenhouse for their last month inside..I'll have to water more.. and watch for overheating..
but to my surprise... with such seeming neglect... I cut the hole in the roof to mount the plastic.. and found the red iochroma blooming.. ready to go...

That's awesome, Gord! I guess they don't need as much sun as we think they do.

Brandon, FL(Zone 9b)

My Iochroma that got from ShepMike last year didn't make it thru winter...I would like to try again and have a lot of rooted 'Isabella' Brugs that I can trade .

Houston, PA(Zone 6a)

I tried to grow from seed last year. The seeds were tiny and none germinated. I'll be buying some plants this summer. Maybe I'll try some cuttings too.

Mulberry, FL

I would like to find a source for these seed that is I am a seed freak lol I would like to find where I can buy 50 seeds at a time not 5-10 no fun there :)

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)

they'd prune nicely in a 100' hedge row wouldn't they... summer long covered n trumpets..

Mulberry, FL

Gordon how cold hardy are these plants will they take some cold? Brugs do I found a couple I missed last year when I moved them in the green house. They did just fine on there own and it got down to low 20's here plenty. I think one was Dr Sues and a small Angels Exotic ,Dr Sues has buds these where both small plants. Next yeat there staying put not going through that again. The bigger plants I cut off at the ground level and mulched. They are already 3-4 ft already and buds!

Sugar Land, TX(Zone 9a)

My healtiest plants are those in ground that froze down. They are much larger and look stronger.

This year I let all my plants freeze. Even ones in very small pots are coming back.

Mulberry, FL

Good to know thanks!

Brooklyn, NY(Zone 7b)
