drought suffering wintherthur viburnum

have two winterthur viburnum that had done well their first year...this year's drought got to them both...virtually all the leaves browned...there are still some but not many green leaves on each...lost cause? or do I put down a good winter layer of mulch and hope for the best in the spring? thanks

Soak each of them, then mulch well. Do not let them go into the winter dry. If there are some green leaves, they will probably survive. You might cut them back by half at this time too. Be sure to soak them at least once per week until normal rains return. Lay the hose at the base, without a nozzle, and let it run for at least 20 minutes to really get the water to the bottom of the root system.

Scratch the stems - if they are green, you still have live plants. If there are green buds at the terminals of the stems, you will have new growth next year.

If you answer yes to either of these issues, do as HoosierGreen has recommended.
