I found him while weeding and I put him back into the soil after his photo was taken. Is this a good guy or a beetle? This is the only photo that came out good, this thing kept jumping and moving around while I had him on a paper plate, which made all the photos blurry.
It is a pupa of a moth, but unfortunately, I have no idea as to its specific identification.
It could be a sphinx moth pupa - see http://bugguide.net/node/view/6573 for an example.
Thank you both, we had a couple of black witch moths one year and do have lots of the sphinx moths/hummingbird moths here. That is a good sign for me, they pollinate lots of my plants here. Thank you again.
