Don't know insects well enough to describe, but I was fascinated with the colors. The wings were upright. The insect wasn't flying when I saw it, just hopping/flitting around

Are you able to describe it a little bit more? Your description is too vague to help ID. Upright wings sounds like a butterfly. Was it that, or different like a wasp of some kind?

No, not a butterfly. An insect as in ... a thing with a head, and abdomen. The only similiarity I could find in the bugfiles was with the family Alydidae. .. just in shape.


Sorry to be so vague, I wish I could give a better description too.

This was in northern California.
