Large ! Dragonfly ID please

Northeast, LA(Zone 8a)

This is a dragon fly in the top of this tree. I am shooting a 100-400 lens. I still cropped more to see what detail there is. The next photo will show the tree as I took the picture. The tree was about 18 ft tall. You can tell by the y that it is not just a whip.

Thanks for whatever help you can give. I know it is a poor picture. I have never seen a dragonfly that large. It was much larger than a whitetail.

There is not nearly enough detail in the images to attempt an identification. You might try bringing up some of the images at http://tinyurl.com/37rmej5 to see if you can find a match.

Thanks Suunto. Do you have any idea what family would get that large?

Shawnee Mission, KS

It "might be" a female Widow Skimmer. The dark portion on the wings would match.

Skimmers are in the family Libellulidae; none of these get terribly large. It more likely is in the family Aeshnidae, Gomphidae, or Corduliidae.
