What kind of insect is this?
This is a larva of a pipevine swallowtail butterfly, Battus philenor (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/y2hwwlm for an image. It will turn into a beautiful dark blue butterfly - see http://tinyurl.com/2aetnc7
