I am a black and yellow banded critter w/ a shell similar to a pill bug and approximately 2 inches long. I was located in South Texas between Freer and Tilden crawling across a patio with many family members. I did not appear to sting or bite. Sorry my picture does not show my color. Would you please guesstimate what I might be.

This is a millipede in the order Polydesmida (see http://tinyurl.com/24pg468). Known as flat or flat-backed millipedes, they can give off a cyanide compound as a defensive mechanism. It is not enough to harm a human; if you pick one up and carefully sniff it, you should detect a faint odor of almonds.
Suunto, thank you very much.
You're welcome; I often see these fascinating creatures in the woods here.
