This is an underwing moth (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae; Catocola sp.). There are several species that can have this general color pattern, see http://tinyurl.com/2fwdqav for an example.

awwww.....some brew!! I put rotting fruit out for butterflies. I need to check around at night too! Never thought of it before....thank you so much for the insight!
