Saw this furry orange caterpillar mid September, 2010 in Nova Scotia, Canada. It was about 4cm long.
Maybe Yellow Bear (Spilosoma virginica) Virginian Tiger Moth ?

The yellow bear is a distinct possibility, but another highly variable species in the same family, the salt marsh caterpillar (Estigmene acrea) can be very similar in appearance - see http://tinyurl.com/25ymumc for an image.
I'll go with that, seeing as it was spotted in a region of Salt Marshes. I couldn't find much info on it's range though, very little info about sightings in Nova Scotia (North Eastern Canada)
