Rather large, with a beautiful underside, which can be seen in second picture. Thanks for any help identifying this garden visitor.

This is Argiope trifasciata (the banded argiope), sometimes also called a banded garden spider - see http://tinyurl.com/2t6xhx. They appear to be less common than the very widespread yellow and black argiope, Argiope aurantia.
