I am trying to identify the wasps or hornets that are currently building a nest under my porch roof near my front door.
CLOSED: wasp/hornet identification
These are paper wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) in the genus Polistes; they resemble Polistes exclamans - see http://preview.tinyurl.com/29mzpa8 for an image and http://tinyurl.com/362ynrx for detailed information. Polistes species do not appear to be nearly as aggressive as some other social wasps (such as yellow jackets and bald-faced hornets), but they may sting if you disturb their nest.
Thank you! The links are very helpful too.
