What did ya'll do today?

I waited for the rain, but it never showed up! It was very windy and looked like the sky was going to bust open. I went to cut my moms grass and when I got home I potted up some Rosa Banksiae "Lady Banks" cuttings I got from her. The bush is as old as I can remember! I also had to secure my greenhouse shade cloth better. Then off on the tractor to do some more tilling. My little girl just loves the tractor too...It was a good day! Lisa

Hi. I snuck back into a historic mansion where my office usually is, but it is being painted now, and crept up to the 3rd floor attic which hasn't been cleaned up for a dozen years since major leaks brought down a lot of plaster. The roof was finally repaired but no one ever cleaned up the mess. I got so sick of seeing it and neither the non-profit organization who is supposed to be restoring the place nor the county who owns it are doing anything, so I started cleaning up and making repairs all on my own, incognito. I had been gluing and repairing 2 chairs and an occaisional table over the last week, sweeping (the dust was so bad I had to use a painter's face mask) twice and then mopping. I got caught! and of all the people to catch me, it was the county manager. But this time he had people with him who said "well, who's going to object to someone cleaning for free," and he agreed. Phew! (But it was more fun when I was sneaking around).
I found lots of cool things including photo negatives from 1878! Also some from 1917, the year the house was built.
I also found a big wooden box of terrific old light fixtures, woolen baby clothing, an autographed photo of Virginia Mayo, and scrap books with dance cards, valentines and other Victorian type paraphenalia. What fun!

Good grief karma...you make me feel exhausted! Sounds like a good day to me! Lisa, I'm jealous...altho I got to do some tilling it was only a little bit, about 30 minutes worth (and actually broadcast some peas and turned them under as well!). Woodspirit, you sound like you hit paydirt! Who does all that stuff you found belong to? I sure hope you are documenting some of it. (By the way, in a previous post did you say you were somewhere in the mtns of NC?) As for the rest of my day I spent time in the greenhouse seeding more flats, planning where to plant entirely too many things in the garden (and I'm supposed to be taking it easy this year), and then went for a short walk-and-read in the woods down by the creek...a very mellow day. Hopefully tomorrow my body won't be so sore from sledding on snow/ice with my daughter this past thursday (I gained a bit too much speed and ran my nose thru a series of tomato cages...oh yeh, the rest of my body also followed my nose.) It was great fun.

I went to Butterfly World in Coconut Creek, FL. There were so many butterflies out there! If you were to stand still for a few seconds, you will most likely find a butterfly on you somewhere.

Happy Toes
You should have seen the passifloras there! P. pura vida red/purple forms, p. boenderi, p. quadrangularis,etc...I want one of each, but came home empty handed! :( I forgot to mention the orchids, and the hummingbirds.

Instead of planting beans like I had planned, I went to an oyster roast instead. They were sooooooo good!

Horshoe: The things found are inheirently part of the house which is owned by the county. We also have the archives temporarily housed there on the second floor. It is open one day a week for research but I am up there regularly, receiving and cataloging items. For a small county (Transylvania County, NC), we have over 400,000 items including photos, letters, maps, books, deeds, family histories, clippings and a few artifacts. I also interview older people and transcribe those interviews for researchers. Some are 18 pages, typewritten, long (Phew)! We're know for the natural resources that bring people here for vacations. About 2/5 of the county is in National Forest and we have more waterfalls than any other county in the U.S. (about 250 major ones). One of my projects is researching heritage plantings that are appropriate for the particular historic site. I work on 2 of these, one dates to around 1917 and the other about 100 years earlier....:o)

Isn't it funny how we 'assume' we know the gender of the people on here! For me it all depends on the name. Sometimes it is masculine, sometimes it feels masculine and most of the times it's not and vice versa......LOL. One would assume that women would choose feminine 'handles' and the men masculine but it really doesn't work like that. Not having been on this website very long I really don't know who's who, but getting there!! We went to mass this morning and took the car. DH forgot the house keys. Because we are renting this house he didn't bother to put house keys on car key ring. I suggested we go to the landlord for another set of keys. Oh no - that did not bode very well. So for about two hours, he tried to get into the house, even trying to pick the lock!!! I ask you! By this time I had had enough and the cats were going nuts. He then relented and we went to the landlord's house, picked up the spare keys and were home in 30 mins. So, we left the house at 11 this morning and didn't get inside until gone 2.30. I cooked the pork chops, collard greens, carrots and mashed potato and gravy. Had a cup of coffee and here I am. Glad to be a woman, glad that I don't have anything to prove and glad that I have a laid-back personality. -:)

A late posting...yesterday (Saturday) after the morning coffee, I hauled four trailers full of leaves to the compost heap. The leaves are finally all where they belong, woohoo!

Then my oldest son and I took the lawn tractor and trailer to the neighbor's cow pasture, and scooped up about 300 pounds of cow manure. Layered everything then cleaned up some of our back yard flower beds (the lirope grass needed a haircut worse than me!) and hauled all the leaves, grass clippings, etc. back for one last load to the compost pile. My pile is now 3' wide x 3' tall x 25' long. A good six-foot stretch is "old stuff" that the former owners left us, and will be ready to use this spring; the rest is from leaves we raked out of our yard plus household waste (trimmings, peelings, coffee grinds.)

My husband and sons built me a potting bench, with room for our trashcans underneath (a double-duty affair), and I'm so excited to finally have a place outside to stow my hand tools, gloves, and a place to set plants before they go into the garden!

Everybody was starving after a day outside, so we crowded into the kitchen and made fajitas. I love it when they all want to help - it's chaotic but so much fun to see our kids cooperating and creating a meal.

After church this morning, we came home and added a second "story" to my indoor light stand, and now all the flats are under the lights, no more rotating them around every day!

We're still re-doing the inside of our house, so my husband is painting the last of the trim, and I'm staining threshholds. It's finally about to all come together - the last little details seem to drag on forever, but we're determined to get them licked before spring officially arrives because nobody will want to be stuck inside! What a great weekend - too bad tomorrow's back to the "real world!"

Richmond Hill, GA(Zone 8b)

As far as names go, that's sooooo true! Cause in reality I'm a female. LOL I picked my "name" because I've been called "Pete" all my life along with several other members of my family. With a name like "Peterson", you can understand why. :)

I had such a "boring" day. Opened up my birthday presents... diamond and ruby earrings, ring, and necklace. A card with an iou for two betty boop rose bushes and two purple smoke trees. I forgot to mention the turtle candy. Unfortunately, I had dash out the door to be at my out of town job by 6:30 am tomorrow morning. I'll be so glad when this job is over. I am so lucky to be loved and spoiled so much!

Huntington Beach, CA(Zone 10a)

I like rain...but this is too much. It has been non stop rain since I woke up this morning. It rained all day yesterday also and this is not normal for So. Calif... I think I saw Noah float by about noon. LOL
Haven't done anything productive today...I did cut my DH's hair, played some Nintendo with him, went over the monthy budgets, made some jello and choc. pudding and then went to computer to check in for the 2nd time today. We are going over to my daughter and SIL's for Turkey dinner tonite. They got a free turkey for Xmas and froze it, so decided it was great weather for a warm yummy meal.
Carol7....happy birthday to you...Diamonds??? you must have been a good little girl this year.

Happy Birthday Carol - Lucky you!!

GoVols - I can imagine how hard you and your husband have worked on the house etc and you deserve a "whole summer in the garden", as your reward. Guess I'm going to be a little tied up with the new house end May, but I intend to do as little as possible regarding this. Just move in, unpack the really 'neccessary things'. I shall enjoy my new land, build a patio (I didn't want a deck)and just feel my way around the woods, hopefully discovering little treasures. Then come the winter I will concentrate on prettying up the house. But for now, my day will end with looking at the posts, designing my garden and watching a good movie.

See what I mean about names "Ms Peterson"

We went to our farm club meeting and potluck. This club is a group of farmers and ranchers who get together once a month to share information, work together on projects like restoring a one room schoolhouse for a meeting place, and helping on each other's places when there is a big project or a lot of little ones. We formed this group about 5 years ago. Of course we had animals to feed this morning, then I made a potluck dish to take to our meeting, and we got home just in time to do the chores again. Kind of a lazy day. Lisa, I think you have a good idea here for an ongoing journal type feature (like the one on the farm forum).

Efland, NC(Zone 7a)

woodspurt! er, I mean Woodspirit ( ;>}....just teasing. I reckon "Horseshoe" is gender neutral so you're forgiven. By the way, I'm very familiar with Transylvania county...Brevard, right? And the great Pisgah Forest. Matter of fact, I used to slide down sliding rock when it used to just be a place where you pull off the side of the road. Now I understand it is a tourist attraction. Are you by any chance doing research around Cedar Mountain? I grew up in that area...Jones Valley. (If you want to see an original Jones go to the photo forum and find "indoor plumbing and proud Emerson"...by the way, I'm one of the two on the white horse.)
Happy Birthday Carol! Hope you do something fun to celebrate! Louisa, sounds like you got the right idea concerning your place! Enjoy! I'm a bit south of you in NC..not quite sure where you city is (guess I better look on the map) but anyone in Va is a friend of mine. Gotta go!

A belated Happy Birthday to you Carol!! Diamonds!! Wow!!!What a lovely present!! You must have a terific DH. I hope you had a really great day.

On the subject of names, I'm female too. I'm from the North of England. As simple as that.

I've set up my first propagator. I've never grown seeds inside before. I'm used to hardy annuals - they're so easy. Anyway I'm giving this a go. The seeds seem so incredibly small. And I don't know whether I've given them too much room or too little. I suppose there is a certain amount of trial and error. If you don't try you don't learn.

I can sympathise with the unexpected visit quynh. I had friends turn up unexpectedly a year or two back. I was feeling rotten with a sinus problem (had an op a few months later), my Dad was having a long lie in bed - eventually appeared in the dirtiest shabbiest dressing gown you can possibly imagine, I'd just shoved a washing in the machine and to add to the confusion I'd just washed my hair and it was soaking wet when the doorbell rang. And they hadn't had lunch so I had to ask them to go round for a pizza. I felt like vanishing through the floorboards. Anyway they enjoyed the visit and that's the main thing and it was nice for my dad to see someone even if he was half-asleep. I always gave my Dad a long lie-in on a Sunday. Won't forget that in a hurry!!

ontario, ON(Zone 2a)

Sounds like you all had a great weekend. Up here in Canada i shoveled snow. Yes on top of the 3 feet we already have we got another foot. I am still dreaming of gardening. I wish I could be playing in the dirt also.
Happy Gardening
