Merrymath, The forsythe pot is a great method. I have started many plants this way. In the fall, it stays too wet, but earlier in the summer, it is fantastic.
Enjoy, Linda

Thanks for the info Linda. I was not considering using it now.

What about springtime?

I could not get either link to work.

Merry, thanks, that is very interesting. Now I need to hunt some corks. LOL Very interesting. JB

I think Ace hardware still sells corks. I know they had rubber ones and I am going to buy my clay pot and a rubber cork , to fit, at the same time. I think a real cork will rot in a year so buy a couple of them.

I am not sure I want to go to the trouble and expense of making one of these because I still have great luck with my test tube method and really have no need to change. I do however think it is a great method and for people who do not have a method that works for a few cuttings, then I think it is certainly worth a try. JB

Explain the test tube method....I might want to try that.

Thanks

Deb, I do cuttings on any tropical plant I get my hands on if it is not patented. I put the cutting in a test tube and keep the water fresh and clear. Sometimes using peroxide to help keep the water good. I fill them with a syringe when the get low. I keep them in a sunny spot, usually morning sun and within weeks or a month at the longest, the strongest little roots come popping out. I like this method because you can see the individual cutting and watch it, whereas if you stick a dozen or more cuttings in a jar of water, you really have no way of knowing if they are all getting the water etc that they need. I use #22 and 25 test tubes and I only have a dozen of each. There are some cuttings I do not use them for because of the size, but begonias and gardenias, etc. are fine. Anthurium needs a larger container. I like water starting because I can watch it . I put little labels on the tubes so I know what I have, along with the date. Again, this method does not work for someone with lots of cuttings and some plants just do not root in water. It is a fun way I found on the internet and I do like it for most of my tropical plants. Thanks for the information...I will have to try this on some of my plants.

Wrightstown, NJ(Zone 7a)

Deb, it does not work for all plants either. You need to be sure the plant you want to root is one that will root in water.

Many people say that water roots are not as strong as soil. This may be true and is something you need to consider. The Forsythe Pot sounds like a very practical method to root outdoor garden plants. If I grew them I would try it. In fact, I may just try that with the Black Pussy Willows, unless Merry makes a pot first then I will send her the cuttings. Right, Mary?????? Please.

Morrisville, PA(Zone 6b)

JB .... have you not wondered why I did not request any of the Black Pussy Willows that you sent to friends and refused the reimbursement for shipping?

I am not fond of them.

I truely believe that you enjoy propagating plants and that you are not doing it to make money.

It appears you just want to generate enough funds to cover the expense of your hobby.

I am not ready to try the Forsethy Pot method .... maybe in the spring ..... I just wanted to share this method that someone shared in another forum.

I do have a feeling that you will try out this method just for the hellooooooooooo of it.

WAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHH You, my dear friend, do not like Black Pussy Willows.
Oh God forbid. I am hurt to the quick.

Anyhow, now that I got that out of my system, No, I did not think about why you did not ask for any BPW. I frankly never gave it a thought because so many people offer us things and I do not accept because I either do not have room, or I just do not have the time to bother.
I was not offended. Honest. Dear Dave is always offering things I can not accept or am just not interested in. So do the others and I never give it a thought when someone does not accept I just assume they have their own reasons as I mentioned before.

No problem Honey you saved me money. LOL I have to get busy now. Thanks for the email addy. JB

I tried this with about 4 different types of plants last year. NONE of them worked. :( I think I'll stick to the plastic bag method.

Ventress, LA(Zone 8b)

Thanks Merrymath. This is the first time I ever heard of this.

OK. I want to try this new method of forsythia pot. I need Japanese Maple cuttings. I am determined to propagate these or else go out and buy a large one.
