I found it on the baseboard in my dining room last night. I think it's harmless but want to be sure, we've seen these trying to get in the house before.

This is a wolf spider (family Lycosidae) in the genus Rabidosa; likely Rabidosa rabida, a very common and widespread species - see http://tinyurl.com/35jyrwn for an image. Wolf spiders often come indoors while searching for prey; large specimens can give a painful (but not dangerous) bite if handled carelessly.
