Which one was that? We've had so many I can't keep them straight. We've had alot of droughts too. It seems like its one or the other.
Rain at Last! (Pt. 2)
I had a drought in 2006, floods in 2007, drought 2008, drought 2009.
2010 was interesting as I had a 100 year flood on June 11th followed by 3 months of no rain at all, record heat in August and then floods Sept 7th.
I hope 2011 will be nice and give us boring average weather.
Word on the street is that Washington and Oregon are going to get hammered this winter or next. They are calling it a year with no summer. We are on tap for a mild winter according to some reports.
Just checked on the Grapevine city website's mapping service, and the corner of my yard is in the 100 year flood plain, my shed is in the 500 year flood plain, but my house is outside of both. Whew.
Jujube-there is no average weather in TX. I believe this is normal. lol
Untrue. There was a normal year back in the 70's. Probably 1976 when we celebrated the bi-centennial by painting our fire hydrants red, white and blue. We also got those cool quarters. That year was great! I bet it was 1976.
OK I didn't live here then nor can I remember that far back. I do however remember the quarters.
I'd call this one normal enough. (In contrast to last year hot drought and three years ago cool wet.) There's always something, but this wasn't too extreme.
Getting no rain for 3 months in a record heat wave seemed extreme to me this year. Austin had the second hottest August ever and the second driest too.
And we spent the whole month walking around saying, "Man, at least it's not like last year..."
All those "hottest ever" statements for Austin are a little more dramatic than informative. There's just not all that many years of recorded data, and we know we have greatly altered the environment around the recording stations in recent years, so it's more a micro-environment comparison. We've clearly made the immediate environment a heat island, and there is an argument that the rising heat actually affects local rainfall.

I can't believe this was the 2nd hottest August on record, not doubting your info. Jujube it just didn't seem that hot. Texas didn't even really get hot until August and other months we had more rain then normal, so I guess it all evened out. We didn't go 3 months in my area without rain, but thats Texas.
I believe Austin had 22 or more days over 100 degrees in August with "trace" rainfall. These are readings from Camp Mabry in Austin.
The rainfall problems were much worse the further south you go. The problem is you have these anomolous rainfall events that alter the real rain patterns of Texas such as Hermine. Without Hermine, you would be looking at rainfall patterns that would be 3-4 months with no rain in certain areas and no rain forecasted either. It looked almost as bad as last year in locations south of Austin. Everything was dead and the earth was cracked. I think that many people north of Austin were getting an inch here and there so the effects were felt as bad.
My hopes are that this is caused by going in and out of La Nina the last few years and doesnt become a prevailing weather pattern.
I hope so too Lee, say will you be coming to the Arlington RU October 10th?
I will be celebrating my 40th birthday and my nephews 2nd birthday that Sunday.
You will have to do your own BBQ.
I just checked climate prediction center and they are predicting another moderate to heavy La Nina that put us in that last drought 2009. It has already started and should progress through the winter into the first quarter of next year. Hopefully it will go away by Spring. It should mean less than average rain for Central Texas/south and very warm winter temps.
This is if we dont get hit with more tropical storms. They said that the La Nina should produce more than an average amount for this time of the year as it increases in strength.
Frankly, since I am on clay, I can deal with a little less rainfall in winter as long as I get my heavy October rains. This should be a good year to let those sub-tropicals get a little growth on them and decent fruit production. That means bumper citrus crops!!!! I also means less than average Apple, Pear and Peach unless you grow the low chill varieties.
Lets hope La Nina dies back by March/April of next year and we get an excellent Spring.
Well, sorry you can't make it maybe next time. Have a great Birthday.
I read about a week ago that the temps for TX r supposed to be colder then average. I honestly have given up with the weather prediction in TX, the forecast can change in a 24 hr period, much less predicting long range.
Also this state is so big there is no way to make generalizations for this large of an area.
I was greatful for the rain because everything was dead here and the ground was cracked. I have livestock and for the moment I don't have to buy hay.
Jujube-Happy Birthday and how can you remember 1976 if you are just going to be 40?
I was six.
I think everything my Mom bought me that year was red, white and blue.
I remember I used to think the song Afternoon Delight by the Starland Vocal Band was a patriotic song like God Bless America.
He doesn't look 40 either! We will miss you and your wife.
Ha Ha! You were such a sweet innocent thing!
Jujube-I remember that song too. My mom loved that song, now I know why. I was 12 and I liked KISS, and to think their still around.
I had KISS trading cards.
I think my first record for my Mickey Mouse record player was Crystal Gale "Dont it make my brown eyes blue".
My brother and I used to almost get into fights protecting the honor of Olivia Newton John against the kids that said bad things about her.
Xanadu rocked!
Grease was great too. But even back then I liked Alice Cooper and David Bowie. That was along time ago, especially if that was the last time Texas had normal weather. (teasing you)
Mem'ries.....gotta luv 'em.
Seems as we get older our memories are more vivid, and the current stuff isn't so important. Ahhh reflections of youth.
