I pulled this leaf off of one of my salvia today. I've seen this sort of caterpillar before, but the tiny white eggs/pupae/larvae/whatever are new and different.
What could these be, and are they a signal that there's an infestation I should be prepared for?
Thanks for looking!
Eek! What's eating this 'pillar?
The caterpillar appears to be a tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta; Lepidoptera: Sphingidae) - see http://tinyurl.com/lr2yn8 for an image. The white objects are the cocoons spun by the larvae of wasps in the family Braconidae, likely Cotesia congregata - see http://tinyurl.com/276ojso for very detailed information.
