Please help me identify this 8-legged friend?

Mount Arlington, NJ

This handsome fellow is living on our back patio in Morris County, New Jersey. Can you please help us identify our resident?

Thank you for any assistance you can provide. :)

I believe it is one of the genus Larinioides, the Furrow Orbweavers. They are harmless.

I disagree with Larinioides. I believe this to be an Araneus sp., perhaps the Cross spider (Araneus diadematus). Color can vary among individuals of this species. Here's one:

I lingered over that one too.

Maybe suunto can help us out.

I agree with flatpickit; this does appear to be a female Araneus diadematus, but bear in mind that some other species of Araneus can be superficially similar, and that nearly all of these spiders can demonstrate considerable individual variation in color pattern. Sometimes dissection is the only way to be absolutely certain of a species identification.
