Hi, I photographed this today, 9/5/10, in Mt. Pleasant, MI. I've never seen anything like this. Does anyone know what it is? It is a very large flying insect? with a long proboscis. The body was about 2 1/2 - 3 inches long.
Please help me identify this flying insect with proboscis
Looks like a Hummingbird Clearwing Moth.
Thanks pennsylvanicus!
I believe it is a White Lined Sphinx

Melody is correct - see http://tinyurl.com/2aqko3p for a very similar image of a white-lined sphinx moth, Hyles lineata (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae).
