Post your colored egg pictures please :-))

I thought it might be fun to have a thread were people posted the various color eggs they have been getting and of course tell us which breed laid them for you. Usually the person starting out a picture topic thread posts the the first picture(s) but unless you want me to take a picture of my store bought brown eggs I bought for eating I don't have any eggs to show.

This sounds like fun!
Here are 2... One is from my lavender split Ameraucana and the brown one is from a Modern Game.

Well, ZZ, looks like you are the only one wants to play. Nice eggs!

I am surprised so far you are the only one. No one else wants to post egg pictures?

I will I will! The girls just need to get busy. The roofers are here and I think the girls are scared silly....

Good, I will be awaiting those pictures.

I think this would be very informative. I DO see those egg pictures posted on e-bay when they are selling hatching eggs. But I wonder how accurate. I think seeing the real eggs people are getting would be very enlightening and also a fun thread. Just my thinking.

Egg photos coming soon...

(Zone 5b)

Wish I had seen this thread earlier, I gave away 3 dozen eggs this afternoon. I'll send a pic in a few days when I have more. Very pretty eggs, ZZ!

Richmond, TX

OK these are not great pictures but here are some of my girl's produce. The blue eggs are from Ameraucanas, the pale brown are from Barred Rock and the browner ones are from Jersey Giants and Buff Orpingtons.

Someone on here once suggested that blue eggs showed a truer color on an orange background so I tried this:

But I still think the flash washed out the color a bit. They are not a bright blue by any means but look bluer in person to me.

Blue is apparently a very difficult colour to reproduce photographically. I remember in my Landscape Materials class being told that you had to use special filters to reproduce blue flowers because there actually are very few or no truly blue flowers...it is an optical trick that makes them appear blue to the human eye.

I don't know if that is also true with eggs, but I do know that they always look washed out unless someone has obviously monkeyed with them somehow. There are some howlingly faked ones on eBay.

I think yours look very pretty, porkpal...you can definitely tell they are different shades of blue. I've heard shooting them against a brown background also helps, but the orange is definitely an improvement.

I love the blue eggs :-)) And I see there is even quite a difference in the brown eggs. So I guess that means that egg colors are very varied in the brown egg breeds. Not referring to the ones that lay the very dark eggs like the Marens and Welsummers but the more typical brown egg breeds.

I wonder what would happen if you tried a deep blue backround?

The eggs would look white.....

Oh, not what we want. So much for that idea.

The Poultry Pages is a really excellent UK site on poultry and the information on egg colour is first rate.

This link is on the difficulty in maintaining dark colour in the eggs of dark brown layers...but if you go to the bottom there are links on blue eggs and a chart of the colour of eggs by breed:

Nice site. It looks to have lots of information and I am going to check out other articles on there, thanks.

I will have to see whether my chickens lay darker eggs in winter. I've never noticed. We certainly have enough heat and sun if that can bleach eggs.

Ooooooo so pretty. I didn't realize the BCM eggs had the speckled egg effect too. I thought it was only the Welsummers that did that.

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

And I love the blue egg. The others look great took but I love the blue one in the grouping of three.

Lodi, United States

Speckling is sort of an individual bird event...some do and some don't. Welsummers are commonly reported to, but I think you may notice it occasionally in other breeds that lay darker eggs.

Ok, good to know :-))

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I took this pic today. The dark egg on the left and the middle egg are the 1st and 2nd eggs from one of my pullets. I am not sure if she is the golden comet or the RIR/EE cross. The egg on the right is from my second year layer. She is a barred rock hen.

Wow! I didn't realize that pic was such a closeup.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Maybe this one won't be so close.

The pictures may be alittle fuzzy but the egg color is fantastic.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks. I was so pleased with the color and especially the size fo the pullets first 2 eggs ever. They are usually small and not regular. She has layed 2 days in a row and the eggs are huge. I seem to be having some issues with my old faithful camera. It's about 6 yeras old now so I may need a new one.

Richmond, TX

I bet the eggs are from your Rhode Island Red. The blue egg color is dominant so I wouldn't expect a clear brown egg from an Easter Egger cross.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

The RIR is the EE cross. She is from an EE roo and a RIR hen. The other pullet is a Golden Comet.

Richmond, TX

Ok then I bet the eggs are from the Golden Comet - whoever has no EE in the background.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I was leaning that way too after I read a bit on the Comets. It says they start laying earlier than other heavy breeds.

(Zone 5b)

These are from yesterday and the ones so far today - minus 2. The dogs get to eat one when they walk to the coop with me. The eggs are now in my neighbors fridge.

Wow. 24 eggs. Ha, I counted them :-)) All pretties, looks like lots from your Easter Eggers. I just love the mixed colors egg basket look. Thats what I want, a variety of colors on my eggs. That one very top darker blue one is the pick of the litter :-))

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

My dogs don't like them raw. When I wormed the chickens we couldn't eat the eggs for 2 weeks so I boiled them for the dogs and turtles.

(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Rita! The Girl's are laying fools the last week! I think cooler weather has helped. I can hear a few of them singing the egg song from inside the house right now - they're getting their chores done LOL. The 2 Welsummers aren't laying yet but I'm hoping to get some pretty dark-ish speckled eggs from them. I think I've narrowed down my picks for the next batch - 3 Welsummers, 3 Cuckoo Marans. Total 6. Then I absolutely have to stop!!! Except that I'd love to also add 2 olive eggers but have not found them at a hatchery.
ROFL, my dogs walk to the coop with me, drooling and waiting for a fresh egg! The are so respectful to the chickens, no chasing and the Girl's feel free to peck any of them that get in their way. This has been such a fun experience!!!!

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Annie- I think you could get Easter Eggers that lay olive eggs from a hatchery by pot luck but not as something to count on. And if the olive eggs are what one wants I would say luck of the draw would be against you.

I do like the idea of Olive Eggers myself. But I also like the blue eggers. I will have to try some sort of Easter Eggers for hatching or even true Ameraucana. However, I am sure those supposed Ameraucana eggs on e-bay are not the real deal and are just some sort of EE. Nothing wrong with EE, just wrong if it's being misrepresented.

Then Welsummers are one of the ones I definately will try hatching. And I also love those dark, dark Black Copper Marens eggs. Just my musings.

But my first choice for a keeping chicken would still be Red Stars. I don't know of anywhere to get eggs that will hatch out Red Stars. Since they are sex links, I don't know how one gets the eggs for the real deal.

(Zone 5b)

I haven't been able to find the Black Copper Marans at a hatchery - not sure that I would buy them if I did. Other boards are so fierce about keeping them pure and away from hatcheries. The Cuckoo doesn't seem to have as many people feeling protective of them. As soon as my Welsummers start laying I'll know if I want more of them or not.

I gave away 2 dozen eggs to neighbors today, they were thrilled to get them and made such a big deal about the blue ones.

Some hatcheries sell fertilized eggs, maybe you could find Red Stars there?

North Shore of L. I., NY(Zone 6b)

Don't know how I will get the Red Stars. But only want them later so they can be some keepers. Right now wanting to get some experience hatching. I might have bought everything from a hatchery if I was buying only afew weeks ago. I already know better. Not going to be breeding so its not like I would be able to mess up any breed. But I want the egg colors I want and I want them to be dark. I only knew about McMurray before. I didn't realise there are a whole bunch of hatcheries out there.

I bet those blue eggs are really popular. Must be wonderful to have them in real life instead of just pictures. Your neighbors are really lucky to live near you :-))

(Zone 5b)

Yes, the blue eggs are popular and people love to look at them LOL So do we!

CajuninKY - what do you mean by feeding eggs to the turtles? Snapping turtles, wild or pet turtles? I never knew turtles could eat eggs!
