Looks like a stink bug nymph.

I agree. It appears to be a nymph of a stink bug. These nymphs go through several changes as to markings and coloration.

Here's a whole page of various stink bug nymphs, some are quite similar to yours: http://bugguide.net/index.php?q=search&keys=stink+bug+nymph&search=Search

I agree with your analysis. I had been searching on the net insofar as this bug's ID, and it takes longer when you can't be keyword-specific, however, my first clue was when I removed some of the bugs by hand and couldn't help noticing the stick after they were squished. Thank you for your feedback!

This bug is really doing a number on my pepper plants. It appears to suck the juices from the plant's stems at the elbow area, resulting in limp limbs, leaves, and peppers. I have to remove the fruit before it's mature since it will rot early. Never encountered this problem or bug before here in Northern Virginia. Snug

This appears to be a nymph of the brown marmorated stink bug (Halyomorpha halys; Hemiptera/Heteroptera: Pentatomidae), an introduced Asian species that has become quite a pest in North America. See http://tinyurl.com/44kr59 for more detailed information.
