Hey James
I have a Sass tree for you!!!!
and it's alive and been living in a pot for about a year.
I went to the master gardeners sale today in Jacksonville and Oh shoot for his DG name but Keith(?) who is also a master gardener there had it with him.
I asked him how he managed to keep it alive since they don't like to live once dug and then he told me I could have it cause he was adding it to the compost pile after today so It's Yours now!!!
Thanks
When I got back from my trip today I immediately looked at the cage that had my two little sassafras trees. One had no leaves but thank goodness all of the catapillars had finished eating and had gone to the next stage. The other one had a few leaves left and one "cat" was still wrapped in a leave. Hopefully there's enough for him. If not I'll transfer it to a mexican plum or spicebush depending on which kind it is.
Jameso
I hate to show my lack of internet knowledge but on this thread I've seen nothing but the terms in spots
me space
my space
bump
I don't know what what all of that means and if that's telling me to go somewhere else to look. Remember I was born in Lott, Texas and lived in east Texas and may be a little backwards
Jameso
The problem jameso, is this thread and swap looks pretty dead in the water. I am coming and will post my haves soon. The swap in Arlington is first and is much larger so it gets more action. When people post my space, they are reserving their space to post their haves and wants later on. Most of the time there is more action and people like to be at the top. The bump, brings the thread to the top, to keep it on people's mind. If you would like, go to the NCTRU and see my haves and you are welcome anything. Better yet, you are close to home and the best thing to do is grab a shovel and bring a truck and pay me a visit. As anyone who has ever been here will tell you, we are pretty loose with our plants and love to share. Will be glad to meet you.
Ken got it right it's saving a spot to post the trades and I bumped it to bring it back up on the Texas list so everyone would remember it is coming up.
Alot of folks go to both the one in Arlington and East Texas so until the Arlington one is almost here East Texas will be a lil slow in posting.
Thanks for the explanations. I'm getting old and the world is passing me by. Kenboy I'll take you up on your offer and will let you know. I'm getting a sassafras from Mibus2 but I need a bunch.
Jameso
Keith the guy I got it from says he digs them when they are lil ones with a chunk of root and pots them up and that seems to work pretty much for keeping them alive. I'll have to go look in the yard and see if I can find some more and give it a try and maybe have a few more for ya
Many thanks Phyllis
James, which butterflies do you have feeding on the Sassafras?
Josephine
The tiger swallowtail and the spicebush swallowtails. Both were surprises as I was determined to get tigers this year so I bought 2 mexican plum, 2 black cherry, 2 kinds of chokecherry and I already had two spicebushes. I had only one spicebush swallowtail each of the last two years on the spicebush. Low and behold on two little sassafras trees about a foot and a half tall I've got about 8 "cats". I'm almost sure one or two of them are tigers since I had several sightings at the plant. I thought I had 6 on the black cherry because my book said tigers used the plant in east Texas. They turned out to be red spotted purples. But that was ok as that was a first for me. I'm going to give the chokecherry another year and if it doesn't work I'll get it to you since its on your list. Since the lady is going to be at the East Texas trade and take the noseburn to you I'll bring the kidney wood (it's small) and a paw paw .
James H
Oh James!! you are so thoughtful and generous, God bless you. It is great that you are having such good luck. We did well with Pipevines Swallowtails but not the ones you mentioned.
I have to little Sassafras but no luck on them yet. What can i send for you ?
Josephine.
I find that sass trees do really great in sand or at least that did in Ben Wheeler in sugar sand. I think they are great cause they grow fast and produces hundreds of lil runners that end up as more trees. But most of all is the rhizomes and how they smell! I used the leaves to make my on file too.
Josephine
What did you use for the pipevine swallowtail? I've had a pipevine plant for two or three yearsI got in Kerrville (don't know the name) and no butterfly eggs. I'm sure there's a native east texas pipevine or plant that will be a host. Do you know a knowledgeable butterfly person in east Texas. Experts in the other parts of the states don't know the plants preferred in East Texas. A lot of the people here don't even know them. I read in one of my books that the common checkered used globe mallows in west Texas and sida in east Texas. No one here in the native plant society or nurseries ever heard of sida(cuban jute). Finally the people at the Pineywoods plant center said it grew all over in Nacogdoches so they let me dig up about 20 plants. An east texas butterfly expert would know that. I would also like a host plant for the dainty sulphur. I have sneezeweed and bidens pilosa( my first year for it) which are host plants for that butterfly but no action. There's got to be something out there that will work.

Perkoschilifarm
You had a tiny adjustment to make if you went from Ben Wheeler to Frisco.
Jameso
James, we used Aristolochia fimbriata, a non native, they really love it, do you have that one?
I am trying to build a stock of native Pipevine, so far I have Aristilochia tomemtosa, but they haven't gone for that one very well.
It took us 2 years to get the Pipevine Swallowtails to lay eggs on our plants, but once they started they laid eggs with a vengeance and swamped us with caterpillars, so much so that we had to put some up for adoption because we didn't have enough food for them.
I must tell you that if you ever get them you will see what I mean, they eat likes pigs, and don't want to give up eating and pupate.
They are beautiful and very much worth the trouble though.
If you want plants for the Little Yellow the Partridge Pea, and Lindhiemer's Senna are both hosts, I do have both of them and can send you seeds.
Please let me know.
Josephine.
James...you asked about the Pipevines and Josephine told you the good ones, but i want to caution you about a bad one. Aristolochia gigantea is NOT a good host plant. The PV will lay eggs but the cats die early. Dale Clark (www.dallasbutterflies.com) will confirm that statement.
Josephine
The tomentosa may be the one I've had for several years with no luck. I'll try to get the other one. I have a ton of partridge pea and have had success with cloudless sulphur and the little yellow. I did have a friend, Mike Heep in Harlingen, Texas dig up some aristolochia erecta for me from some ditches and a Dave's Garden member in Medina gave me some but I haven't had it live from one year to the next. However, I am looking for seeds of Texas ironweed (vernonia texana) and sphaeralcea lindheirmeri.
James
Sorry James I don't have either of the seeds you are looking for but I can send you some of the A. fimbriata seeds if you like.
Shelia
Thanks for the info..I will avoid that particular pipevine. Are you still giving programs on butterflies? I do have a question for you. I've pulled a couple of dead butterflies off of plants. One is almost twice the size of the other. From the markings I know the large one is a cloudless sulphur. Both, when in a sunning position have clear wings. The book I use to identify butterflies is Butterflies of Houston & Southeast Texas because that's going to be pretty close to what we have in Longview as opposed to Dallas-Fort Worth or the Hill Country. All of the pictues I've seen of the little yellow, and orange sulphur show dark black markings on the inside wings. From that I can't say its a little sulphur but instead a cloudless sulphur that's smaller. I see many of both sizes. Is there a yellow butterfly that I don't know about or is this just natural? Last question concerns the dogface. What do you use as a host. I have black dalea, false indigo, alfafla, and purple prairie clover. I haven't even seen a dogface. I just got a Texas kidneywood...my Houston book says that it's widely used in the dogface in the Corpus Christi area. Maybe they are not around here although a distribution maps indicates they are. What's the best plant used in Fort Worth?

Josephine
I would like those pipevineseeds. Thanks. Also many wildflower weeds are to be planted in the fall. Does that mean the first month of fall or the second month, or the third month?
James
My list can be seen on the NCRU trade thread.

I just saw your trade list on the Northtexas trades. I think that one is after the East Texas trade. If you have any of the East Texas blue mist left I'd like one. Maybe Tina can bring it to the east Texas trade. I've never heard of that plant and I could replace my Greggs blue mist with it. I do like to try and have east Texas natives whenever I get the chance. I could harvest the seeds, replant and place them in our native plant society plant sale the next year.
James
James, I just reserved some Fimbriata seeds for you and one
East Tx Bluemist Conoclinium coelestinum, this is a late bloomer that likes more shade and water than the Conoclinium greggii, and i wouldn't do away with greggii, because it blooms a lot earlier and longer, so keep both, it will round out your bluemist season.
Josephine.
jameso...I will dmail you on the bfs.
Josephine
"ll take your advice because I do need nector plants all blooming season.
jameso
Josephine.. do you have more pipevine seed??? may I have some??? Ill bring you something pretty in trade..
I have to check and I will let you know.
okay!
Blkraven, I checked my Aristolochia fimbriata seeds and I do have enough for you and James.
Josephine.
thank you.. Ill have a pretty something for you when I see you...okay???
Sure, I am just glad I had the seeds for you.
I am so depressed right now...not only is work somewhat depressing as things are not getting much better but this week DH called someone that had an ad for cutting down trees and hauling them off for free so he decided that all the big old pines that only had fluff at the top were going bye bye...well that is all find and dandy but now the land scape around the ones that were by the entrance of the driveway are now destroyed ( they were rotting anyway) and I have to dig through the dirt and find the bulbs I planted and my other plants that were there...all but one crepe myrtle and can't find any of the pompass grass along the front has been smashed and gone ....my nice one by my garden is almost up rooted not to mention they almost backed over my oriental pear tree my folks got me a year ago for Christmas and I found tonight that 2 of my rose bushes have branches broke off where they either pulled the trees by or drive too close.
My hopes of having fall tomatoes and peppers is gone as they have smashed the garden area..I can't get to where the sweet tators are planted it is covered by trees too.
Not to mention while at work this morning Dh calls me and says do I want to call the electric company as he doesn't know who to call as one of the guys backed into the guide wire on the power pole and the lines to the transformer to across the road broke so we had no power til they came and fixed it but they took all tree peoples info for the bill I guess. So luckily I can look things up on my cell and get the number and call to get ahold of oncor who maintains the lines to come fix it..........now I'm just praying they don't hit my black willow, persimmons, apple trees, the nice cedar and my small oleander along the easement road.
SOOOOOO if anyone has any crepe myrtles they want to get rid of I'll gladly take them ..any color.
