CLOSED: What kind of spider is this?

Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada

I found this on my daylilies today and it has built as you can see a huge home. At first from a distance I thought there was a tent caterpillar on the lillies and went to move it, but then saw this little creature!

Notty, how big (or small) is this spider? Is it brown or black? The photo is a bit dark so I really can't tell.

It could be a funnel web spider. There are some that generally look like your image.
They are harmless.

Royersford, PA

Possibly a nursery web spider.

Morrisburg, Ontario, Canada

The spider is probably about three to 4 inches long and black, not brown.

Benton, KY(Zone 7a)

Yes, nursery web might be a better choice

disclaimer: don't click the links unless you want to see LOTS of spiders!

This does appear to be Dolomedes tenebrosus, commonly known as the dark fishing spider. See http://tinyurl.com/mfgda6 for details on its life history.
