I have never posted a picture, so this is a test...
So happy, my plumerias are blooming
wow! someone must be doing a smoking job at plant care. way to go pam! very nice blooms.
what is your summertime temps and humidity?
TucsonPlumeriaz, Thank you very much.... I am in Southern California about 15 miles inland from the beach in Coto de Caza.
The weather has been cool this summer with temps in the high 70's and mid 80's at best.. Nighttime in the 50's. The humidity is about 15-30 %. not a lot. last week we did have 95 degrees with high humidity, but that only lasted a week... My plants usually start blooming about April, but this year not until June, way to long to wait. They all seem to be happy now though. Most of my 400 plants are in pots, so I can move them in to the garage over the winter. I do have about 15 larger trees in the ground and they seem to do fine over the winter. If your ever in Southern California in the summer, you must come check out my hobby, that has taken over my life... But there are worse things..:)
P.S. I get a lot of my cuttings from friends on Kauai, so that is why I don't know a lot of their names..
thank you for the invite! i wasn't too far from you this summer. bummer! i was in dana point photographing a wedding in june.
wow! you have lots of plumerias. i gather that your garage is large like your pool. lol very nice to be able to bring them in and not have to worry about them during the winter.
when do you bring them inside for the winter? do you let them go dormant in the garage and let the leaves fall naturally? or do you keep them growing in the garage during winter? i am bringing all of mine inside this winter. i want to relax and not have to worry about covering plants. lol hopefully, things will be rooted by then so i don't have to run any heat mats. i am taking winter off this year!
thanks sharing your wonderful plumeria. btw, not have a name is good...
Yes, You were real close to me. Dana Point is about 15 minutes away.. Next time.
I am fortunate to have a 10 car garage, so I have plenty of space, although my husband wouldn't agree. He is coming around a little each year and he is now helping me move them all in over winter. I think they are starting to grow on him..haha
I bring them in about Christmas time and take them out as soon as it warms up. This year I brought them out at the beginning of March, but I did loose about 20 small ones due to some rain, we usually don't have. Root Rot. We don't get a lot of freezing nights so I play it by ear. Before I bring them in I strip all the leaves off, and then I don't water them until they come back outside. When I bring them out I give them a little water and then more when they start getting their leaves. It seems to work for me.
The plants I have in the ground get watered everyday, by the sprinklers and the rain that falls, through the winter.
I have gone as far as cutting strips of flannel material and wrapping each branch when I know the temp will be in the 30's. Thats when my husband knows I am NUTS.. But they do great, so that works for me too.
haha! i could rent out one bay in your garage. lol
thanks for sharing how you care for yours. i am always interested to see what other ppl are doing. i can leave mine outside under the patio, but i'd rather not just in case we get really cold. we have many nights in the 30s. i don't think being dry and that cold is good for them. then, you have the sun heating them up during the day. i am just bringing them inside! lol
more nice beauties. thanks for sharing. i am waiting for my vera cruz rose to bloom one day! i first smelled that one when i visited florida colors. it took me a while to get it after that. now it's taking forever to bloom! haha!
oh my! i'm gonna have to go plumie shopping in your yard. lol you must be really excited now to see all of these blooms! how long have you been growing plumeria?
People keep telling me I have too many... They say I should sell/give away some, but I so enjoy waiting and watching them bloom. I tell them "would you give away your children" haha.. Anyways I first got the bug about 7 years ago
when we built our house and I planted some larger specimens. I then started taking some cuttings from them and
growing.. Now I go to Kauai 2-3 times a year and my friends load me up with all kinds.. I am on a first name basis
with the agriculture dept and get the best customer award at UPS Kauai for shipping.haha. oh and one more trick
since Plumerias are like weeds on Kauai, I find out where the county workers will be trimming or cutting back the trees along the highways. They are just going to throw them away, so I save them that step. It is so much fun...
palmtreepam,
do you send all of them home through the mail or do you bring any home on the plane?
sounds like those ppl need to find a hobby and stop making comments about yours. lol well, it sure does sound like you have the hook up. way to go! you are so fortunate. thank you for sharing a little slice of your plumeria.
i think the one that you really love might be aztec gold. does it smell like peaches?
Tina, I send most home via the mail, but I have been known to bring them on the plane too.. I put them in a duffle bag.
No matter what island you get them, if you go home via Honolulu they have to be agriculture checked in Honolulu.
Not the island you get them.. But, if you take a direct flight home from an outer island then have them checked there.
I strip all the leaves off, but leave any infros, and then wash good with soap and water. Check them real good for scales, they will reject any with them. They also prefer cuttings from younger trees. The old tree cuttings make them crazy cause it's hard to make sure they are clean...
One more thing, if you ship them home... do the same, wash them real good, take your box and packing materials,
packing tape, and have agriculture at the island airport check them. Then you will pack them, tape up the box, and agriculture will stamp the box. Then take them to the post office to ship. It is very easy.....
