Identify please!

found this on a bird in Victoria canyon, outside of rapid city south dakota, Victoria canyon is a small slot canyon, this, which is possibly a tick was attached to a small bird which was on the ground stuck in a water hole.

This is not a tick, but a wingless fly with similar habits. It is in the family Hippoboscidae, all of whose members appear to be ectoparasites on birds or mammals. See http://tinyurl.com/m5a5w4 for more detailed information.

It most definitely is NOT an assassin bug, it is an adult hippoboscid fly!! Also, bugs do not have larvae; their immatures are nymphs.
