Unless she has recently tossed a dead animal around, her breath is fine. Unfortunately, between Frankie, Rat Boy, and my two barn cats, there is usually some small corpse laying around as a plaything. And seasonal spawned-out salmon (the worse).
Sofer, maybe you can shed some light on this: my granddaughter and I watched Rat Boy (some sort of terrior) bring a freshly caught mouse/vole up to the yard and then quite systematically break its bones. He never broke the skin or ate any of it and the little critter was pretty flattened out when he was done. What's up with that? We were grossed out and intrigued at the same time.
Help! Fleas!
Voles do not taste good and few animals will eat it. I suspect he was looking for a tasty part of the vole. Often that is the gut. The crushing of the body may also have been after Rat Boy was bitten and he was just getting even. They kill all of their catches not like a cat and just play.
Geeezzzzz
Fleas..... I wonder if Wax Myrtle will thrive out here? It repels fleas..... we used to use it against moths too, very nice tree:

seems like it might do...... long as it doesn't get too cold.
My dog gets Comfortis tp prevent fleas. Love it.
Wow, Kyla! Wax Myrtle seems to be quite magical. Guess I'll be on the look-out the next time I go down South. What a beautiful tree! At least the berries are pretty and useful. Maybe someone would just send me some to put in my drawers.
Well that's the thing, do you see any reason we couldn't grow it here????? It is a wonderful plant though some in its native terrain persist in considering it a weed.
So it goes.
If my mom was still alive she'd be happy to send some out to us. ;)
Kyla, there's nothing our mums wouldn't have sent to us, right? It's nice just knowing that....
Yeah. One Christmas, mine sent me a box of her special wonderful pralines, made with buttermilk so they are better than any other pralines on the planet. She wrapped each single piece in wax paper, hoping they would not shatter, but they did. They were so good anyway! She also included the recipe and told me, next time, make your own, LOL!
BH,
How is Frankie after the food change?
...speaking of pralines, LOL!
Yes, how is Frankie?????
Frankie is much less itchy. She is now eating a no-grain fish based kibble and getting a fish oil capsule squished into each meal, a cranberry capsule, all wetted down with an herbal tea mixture. Also gave her a dose of Revolution, which is a flea-tick-mite-who-knows-what killer. Spoiled spoiled spoiled. Having changed up more than one thing, I will likely not know what was the 'magic bullet' but I think all the changes are good. She's also down to a healthy weight (60#), somehow she put on a bunch of weight last summer. All is good. Here she is 'on guard' surveying her universe for possible threats. Or perhaps daydreaming. Who knows??
She is one gorgeous doggie. Glad she's feeling better too!
I planted a gallon size Myrica cerifera (the Wax Myrtle referenced above) in the spring of 2004. It made it through the first winter, but I lost it in the winter of 2006, which was fairly severe. It might have survived if I had mulched it better, but that was the year my dad's health went totally down hill and my garden was completely neglected. It was a pretty little plant while it lasted.
Ah, thanks for that. I guess it would be pushing it..... but knowing that, I might just try one day.
Oh so happy she is better!!
Frankie has a very sweet face!
