Hi found this beast in my barn in upsate NY. Wondering what he is and if he dangerous. He's about 2.5 inches wide.
Large ny spider what is it?
Any spider that large in New york would just about have to be Dolomedes tenebrosus, known as the dark fishing spider - see http://tinyurl.com/2ao58lg for an image. One this large could deliver a painful bite if mishandled, but it is not dangerous to humans.
So it could not possibly be a wolf spider? We have had two on our window screens this past week. They are about three inches in diameter with legs spread. They spend the day relatively still. I'm not knowledgeable about spiders but this spider looks like what we've seen here as well. I looked at the Dolomedes link and the spider posted above does not have the typical white stripes. Ours did not either. Thanks for the info.
Laurel
A wolf spider (family Lycosidae) also could be a possibility, but I would need to see a close up of the head region in order to see the eye pattern. Please bear in mind that spiders, like humans, can show considerable individual variation in appearance, and that color pattern alone often is not a reliable identifying factor.,
