Possible hobo spider in our bed sheets??????

Toms River, NJ

So I found this guy in our bed sheets, he looks like a hobo, but they don't live around here. I have had several large packages sent to use recently from all over the country. Help!

the image is not clear enough for me to be certain, but this appears to be a grass/funnelweb spider (family Agelenidae), such as those in the genus Agelenopsis - see http://tinyurl.com/26hdk5n for an example. These are harmless to humans. The hobo spider (Tegenaria agrestis) belongs to the same family, but is restricted to the northwestern US. IMHO, the danger of these to humans has been overhyped. See http://tinyurl.com/2cvnzkc for very detailed information on this species.

A question
When you say harmless do you mean not deadly and/or causing skin destruction -- or is it fully harmless - as in no biting?

Almost any spider with fangs large enough to penetrate human skin can bite, but only a very few species are truly dangerous. Grass spiders are not at all aggressive, and you would really have to go out of your way to be bitten by one; and even if you were, the effects would be very minor and dissipate quickly.
