Re-potting and potting soil question

Chicago Suburbs, IL(Zone 5b)

I just picked up a brug at a greenhouse going out of business. They used to have a huge Brug and I suspect this a cutting from that tree. And if it is it gets lovely peach blooms that smell just delicious :)

It looks like it needs to be re-potted but I don't remember if Brugs like to be root bound? If it should be re potted should I wait until just before I bring it in for the winter?

Another consideration is the soil medium does not drain quickly. Would this be another reason to re-pot now vs. later?

Would amending something like a basic miracle grow potting soil be better than straight potting soil?

I use Miracle Grow potting mix, not the MG potting soil which drains even more slowly, and add perlite in a ratio of 2 or 3 parts MG potting mix to 1 part perlite. Be sure that it is perlite and not vermiculite. Perlite is used when the mix needs to drain well. One thing I don't like about perlite is that some of the perlite will eventually work its way to the surface. Being careful to break up the water stream when watering helps, but I'm usually in a hurry because I have so many potted plants.

Brugs' growth will slow down or even stop when root bound. If your plants soil doesn't drain well, you may want to remove as much of the old soil as you can without inflicting too much damage to the roots. Potting up your Brug now will give it a chance to spread some new roots into the new mix before you have to take it in for the winter. Soil with roots in it drains faster than rootless soil. The biggest killer of Brugs in winter is too much moisture for long periods of time.

Thanks for the help. I re-potted per your advice and without a pause it has grown like crazy :)

I'm glad to learn that it is doing so well.
