good or bad, he got sprayed because he is stripping the leaves off my azelea bushes. I just wonder what kind of butterfly or moth he would have turned into?

These appear to be red-headed azalea caterpillars, Datana major (Lepidoptera: Notodontidae). The adults are rather drab-looking brown moths - see http://tinyurl.com/27l2ahr
Thanks, great tip for me to take to the garden club meeting this week, I'll bet a lot of the other ladies need to check their azaleas. So he "is" a BAD caterpiller, so folks, spray him....
