CLOSED: Black and white "bee" ?
This is a flower wasp (Hymenoptera: Scoliidae); it looks a lot like Scolia bicincta - see http://tinyurl.com/25dlvcz for an example. These wasps are predators/parasitoids on soil-dwelling scarab beetle larvae.
Yes! I looked it up -- thanks - had never seen one before, but then I'm not usually staring into the mint plant trying to take pictures of bees ...
