Forgive me if this information is in this forum somewhere, but I've not found it yet. I bought a fourpack of morning glories at the farm project and planted them near the mailbox. I have monster vines that keep trying to absorb the mailbox, but not one flower. Not even a bud. Can you help? I noticed another mailbox planting doing the same thing in the neighborhood. The self seeded morning glories at school have been blooming for months.
no blooms
Me, either - massive vines and not one bloom.
I think to some extent mg's are stress bloomers. If they think they are going to croak, they get busy and set some buds. Maybe yours and perhaps
Kays have been too well watered, even if it's Mother Nature doing the deed.
If you are watering, slow down a little and give it some bloom booster.
I buy bloom buster here, a less expensive off-brand. Dont overdo it
just a tablespoon per gallon of water every week or two. Becky swears by it. She gets tons of blooms.
Kay if you get rain there everyday so that you can't water, then give each of yours a tsp of time release granules near the base of each plant and
let the rain water it in. Just a thought, don't know how that would do.
Wouldn't hurt to try since you're not getting any blooms.
OK, patootie - I'll try that.
My DH used to over fertilize and not get blooms, great big vines though.
I haven't put any fertilizer on mine at all.
Try cutting the Leaders. That seems to make them bloom for me. Just a suggestion.
OK, Debbie - what harm could it do?! LOL
Thanks for the comments. I haven't watered in quite some time and we're in near drought condition here. I'll try cutting back as they're trying to eat the mailbox and I'll try the bloom booster. There's almost no time left for them to bloom now.
Use the water crystal bloom booster by MiracleGro and add them to a gallon of water (I think it's 1 tablespoon mixed in with a gallon of water). And water your vines with that. Within two weeks, you should start seeing some buds form. And shortly after that, you should start seeing blooms! Good luck. Pruning the vine tips might help, too! Another good idea to motivate your vines! ;-)
i planted a row of morning glories and did not fertilize them. then i planted a row of tomatoes about 4 feet south of them, which got lots of alfalfa and kelp. i have lush almost flowerless mg vines -- i think they are stealing fertilizer from the tomatoes [although tomatoes are doing great too, evidently plenty of food to go around]. last year my morning glories were north of my unfertilized rock garden, and were covered with flowers, but had sparse foliage. its been a dry year, and i dont water the tomatoes or mg, so water stress isnt enough in my experience. i cant reach the tips to prune them -- their trellis is 8' high.
We're having another string of dry weather and it's really hot. Vines are growing inches a day. I'll cut them back right now as seeing past the mail box to the road was really hard this morning. When I get to the garden center I'll get some of the bloom booster.
Thanks again.
