Hi All;
Well i am back from the show with the results, some are funny now, at first they were not. lol I called a friend yesterday to ask how to get my blooms to open on angels petticoats, she said she did not know, but try putting the plant up close to lights. So i did for about an hour, when i took it down, I had burned the blossoms that were open, so needless to say i did not take angels petticoats, i did take mothers love & got a red ribbon, also rubicola & got a red ribbon, chico I got a blue ribbon ,sinningia amanda's penny, blue ribbon & Glox. lind. blue ribbon. so it went well,I just did not think i really wanted a red ribbon for ann, as she just did not have enough bloom, thats why mothers love got a red also.Anyway.it was fun.so well worth it.This was an african violet show, next show is in march for our gessie group.

This is the second time i have ever entered anything in a show. The last was probably 3 or 4 years ago. just 1 plant & it got a blue ribbon. Not something i was ever really intrested in doing as i just like growing the plants, but this time the plants were so nice & big just thought i would.We have a show in march of next year, but this one is a gessie show, so maybe.Thanks all

Congrats Bonnie! All in all you did pretty good.

Bill Price grows mostly gesneriads and I think I heard him say one time where he was giving a siminar, that to get the blooms to open, he sets them on the bathroom sink (usually a hotel because its at conventions) and turns on the bathtub shower - hot for 45 min. The warm moisture causes some plant blooms to open. I'm not sure what plants this works with, but it would be interesting sometime to try and see. Thats an expense at home, hot water for 45 min, I don't think my water take holds that much hot water, ha.

I've clerked for judges three times now. It sure is a learning experience. And I agree that it depends on the judges how they look at things. Sometimes in a group the judges disagree on what number of points to take off for this and that. Sometimes they don't want to take off too much for one thing because they have already taken points off for something else and they still want the plant to have a certain plant score to be a blue or red or what.

I went up to TN Gessie Society show and sale this past weekend and was asked to clerk. People lost points for simple things, that combined with the little more major things wrong took their points down. Dirty pots were the most common. Plant label showing. Dirty leaves. Gesneriads do not have to cover their soil like the avsa (no perlite showing), but points were taken off if the soil showing was not attractive, discolored perlite, dirty edge around the inside of the pot, etc...so by covering their soil with moss or something they would not have lost points on that.

Some people work for weeks (months) on a show plant and others just take something off the shelf that looks good at the last minute! Sometimes the one they were not going to bring gets a blue.

Thanks for letting us know the results. We were wondering!

Take care. tish

Hi Tish;
Wow, i guess different states must do different things, i don't recall anything about pearlite. We do have to have slip pots for the violet shows, i think we also use them in our gessie shows.I don't know what they took off for not enough bloom, but i figured that it would get a red because of that. I do know everything is suppose to be clean, you would think they would all be clean as your suppose to repot right before the show,but not all do that. I was helping joe bruns at this show with entries & i did see many blooms that were spent,but thats just the way it goes.I am glad i got blues for the other plants i brought.Yes all judges judge differently.

I don't know, I thought all the rules for violet shows are AVSA..at the Dixie Convention I was told the top of the soil had to be dressed with something as the perlite was not to show...maybe I was told wrong.

If you could post a pict of your lindiana (am I spelling that correct?) - I sure would love to see how a show plant should look. Mine is just leggy, very very leggy.

At this Tn show there was a beautiful gloxinella erinoides (spelling again or koellikohleria whatever they are calling it now). Growing compact and just full of bloom. I've had mine over a year...it goes dormant just before the blooms open and it grows so leggy. I move it here and there and it still just gets long and straggly. Well obviously it CAN grow better, its just me, ha. As it is going dormant yet again, next time it sprouts I will try something else...like putting it up closer to the light right away.

Now isnt that nice! And blooming too! Lovely little bloom. I've heard they are a little difficult to get to bloom.

Ok. Guess that plant (mine) is definitely going to need closer to the light. Live and learn. But I knew a couple inches between leaves on a foot long stem wasn't growing that way because it had too much light...ha. Just haven't gotten around to fixing it's conditions yet.

Thanks for the picture!
