Could someone identify this spider please?

Summerville, SC

Had a little visitor late tonight scare me to death. I deal with brown widows all day in my line of work but this guy was a little bigger faster and more surprising. Was thinking MAYBE brown recluse but Im only guessing from what I've found online and the pattern of the eyes

Cropped image. Also, Im living in South Carolina. And when sprayed with Raid, he stepped back and reared up on his back legs and raised his front legs. Probably about 3 inches with his legs spread out.

Just for fun, I'm going to guess Carolina wolf spider.

This is indeed a wolf spider (family Lycosidae), but the image is too dark for me to be confident of a more specific identification. See http://tinyurl.com/283jrqh for information on the Carolina Wolf Spider, South Carolina's official state spider. The overall appearance, including eye pattern, of recluse spiders is entirely different from that of your specimen, and this species is not native to South Carolina - see http://tinyurl.com/247dyjq

Yeah I could only find the wolf spiders with a more uniform stripe pattern on their backs and this spider had the zig zag patterns. I could prob enhance the image in photoshop to give you a better look. Or if you could confirm that wolf spiders have the zig zag/ jagged pattern on their backs?

A question, Suunto. Do all wolf spiders have those reflective eyes? Still learning here.

The eyes of most spiders will reflect light if it comes in at the correct angle. Wolf spider eyes appear particularly bright primarily because the anterior median pair are much larger than the eyes of most other spiders. Also, abdominal and thoracic color patterns in themselves are not reliable indicators as to which family a spider belongs.

Thanks, Suunto. Again.
