This is an orb weaving spider (family Araneidae) in the genus Araneus; there are several species that can have a similar appearance, one of the commonest is the so-called 'barn spider, Araneus cavaticus - see http://tinyurl.com/c45yoj for an example.

I've been hoping to find one of these. Charlotte's Web is my all time favorite children's book. I read it this year to my 7 year old and it made her cry - mission accomplished!
