Garden Spider?

Santa Clarita, CA

I went to look at my new garden today and there was what looks like on this forum as a Garden Spider. I'm in SoCal though and I didn't see that as a native place, so I couldn't be sure. I'm not really looking for an ID, more of a way to keep spiders out of my garden all together. I know they're good for the garden, but I need them not to be near it or near my house. I suffer from the worst case imaginable of Arachnaphobia and if I can't solve this problem i'll have to get rid of the garden. Non of these things on the market seem like they'd be safe to use on my vegetable garden, what if theyre only in the beginning stage? I'm not just being dramatic, just looking at the spiders in the picture caused a horrible rash to develop on my foot! I look like I have chickenpox when I am actually next to one- so this is pretty important. I'm sure the neighbors would prefer to do without my screaming in the middle of the night as well haha (serious bee issue, have to garden in the dark).

Thanks,

Amanda

For the sake of your sanity as well as that of your neighbors, you may want to consider getting professional help for your phobia. Short of nuking everything in your neighborhood, there simply is no way of keeping all spiders off your property. Check out http://tinyurl.com/264lbfb to see how they can travel long distances.

I read somewhere that you are never more than 3 feet from a spider, whether you are indoors or out. I'm afraid that you're not going to rid your garden of spiders, regardless what you do. Wherever there is prey, there will be spiders. A vacuum where there are no insects, will simply invite more to move in.
