What is this spider?

This spider landed on me while watering - what is it? I have never seen anything like this before. Ideas? I am very frightened of spiders in general - baby that I am.

This is a harmless orb weaving spider (family Araneidae) in the genus Araneus. There are several species that can have this general appearance; see http://tinyurl.com/yjug5f6 and http://tinyurl.com/22qbgu3 for a couple of examples.
